| Times Past A Canberra school student was awarded $1000 for his research into the weight of school bags on this day in 1993. Simon Dugard, a then-year 7 student at Daramalan College, won the Biology and Microbiology section of the BHP Science Awards along with 11 others. "[Mr Dungard] found that year 7 students suffered greater risk of spinal damage because of their less-developed bone structure and the fact that they generally carry heavier bags for longer periods than year 12 students," a story on the front page of The Canberra Times said.
