Queanbeyan's fire brigade and ACT locals had subdued a blaze near Oaks Estate on this day in 1935. A story on the front page of The Canberra Times said the national capital's neighbours "did not split hairs when it became a matter of preventing a serious outbreak". "The outbreak was first noticed by a watchman at 12.30 am and when the brigade arrived shortly afterwards a strong wind was carrying sparks in the direction of the Plume patrol depot, while dry grass was burning towards a house," the story said. READ MORE
