Stormy weather heading into the weekend. Two more severe storm waves will likely cross parts of Minnesota through Friday. The first event cranks up tonight in northwest Minnesota and could rumble into the Twin Cities after midnight.  More on the Updraft weather blog.

National battle over mail and absentee ballots will have a legal skirmish in St. Paul next month. The Minnesota Supreme Court has agreed to speed up consideration of a legal challenge around absentee ballot rules for the November general election. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, a requirement that people voting remotely get a witness to certify their eligibility has been suspended.

The latest on COVID-19 in Minnesota: 7 new deaths; school guidance map shifts.  The death toll has been inching up slowly, and is now at a 7-day average of 7 fatalities, the highest it's been since the first week of July. It’s still just a fraction of the dozens of deaths a day reported in May. Due to rising cases in the area, elementary school students in Ramsey and Dakota counties would no longer be recommended to attend school in person — if school started this week. Activist charged in toppling of Minnesota Columbus statue
Mike Forcia from New Brighton helped put a rope around the statue’s neck and led the group that pulled down the bronze figure in June, as state troopers looked on. Charges filed in Ramsey County District Court say he admitted as much in an interview with state investigators, saying it was part of a larger effort to point out racial inequities.
