Today, on July 26th, 2023, we celebrate the 33rd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act — the United States of America’s most comprehensive civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability. The Disability Justice Caucus of the Democratic Party of Oregon affirms that we all deserve the chance to fully participate in society. On March 12, 1990, hundreds of people with disabilities took part in direct action on the steps of the US Capitol. These brave leaders got out of their wheelchairs and crawled up the steps to demand equity from Congress. We must continue to safeguard and expand basic human rights in this country. |
We remain committed to working for the expansion of the guarantees in the ADA, for we know that not all communities are fully protected. People with disabilities who have multiple identities, such as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color with disabilities and/or members of the LGBTQIA+ communities with disabilities deserve the same, equitable treatment under the law. We remain committed to building a more inclusive, accessible, and equitable state for all. We invite you to celebrate and tell us your story!
