While around 100 Afghans were completing hotel quarantine in Adelaide having escaped Taliban-held Kabul, seven-year-old Amelie from Tenison Woods Catholic School in Adelaide's west wanted to make them feel welcome, and so her class created cards for the new arrivals.

Professor Eddie Holmes was named Scientist of the Year in 2020 for his work early in the pandemic establishing that SARS-CoV-2 was the cause of COVID-19. Even under what he calls the "best case scenario", the virus is here to stay.

"Best case scenario, the virus is never going to go away, but maybe quickly it will evolve to become less virulent," he said.

Former radio presenter Philip Satchell has been remembered as a gentle star among ABC broadcasters after dying at the age of 83 due to illness. Philip Satchell worked for the ABC for 40 years and became a Member of the Order of Australia in 1988.

It was 2015, and the Adelaide resident had no inkling that she was about to fall in love twice over — firstly with Afghanistan, and then with one of its residents. It was while teaching singing at ANIM that Alice met her husband-to-be, whose father also taught there.

Now Alice and her husband are desperately trying to get family members out of Afghanistan.
