Adios, Andrus

Good morning, and welcome to the Tuesday, May 7 edition of the Saints Insider newsletter.

The Saints' situation at left tackle just got a lot more interesting.

After all, the Saints now know that former starter Andrus Peat isn't coming back. The veteran agreed to terms with the Las Vegas Raiders, and our Luke Johnson has the details.

Peat's departure to the Raiders will officially close the door on a reunion between the lineman and the Saints for the time being. Before then, it was hard not to wonder whether that door was still cracked given Peat was a free agent and the Saints had an uncertainty at tackle.

Of course, the Saints drafted Oregon State's Taliese Fuaga in the first round and it's true he could be an option to start on the left side. But the Saints might need him to play on the right side — his natural position — if longtime starter Ryan Ramczyk can't play in 2024 because of a knee injury.

So if Fuaga is on the right side and Peat isn't returning, what do the Saints do at left tackle? Trevor Penning and Oli Udoh could be options. Or they could perhaps to look to sign someone else, something I dove into after the draft.

New additions

If looking at other options at tackle, Luke also wrote about tackle Josiah Ezirim — who the Saints took in the seventh round. The Eastern Kentucky product has a fascinating story and his development is worth keeping an eye on.

In case you missed it, here's some other Saints news, including:

  • A look at undrafted free agent Dallin Holker and why one primetime game in college makes him such an intriguing signing for the Saints
  • How the Saints declined defensive end Payton Turner's fifth-year option
  • Why the Saints-Lions pipeline took another turn with the signing of Will Harris

Anyway, that's all for now. Look out for coverage from rookie mini-camp later this week.

Take care,

Matthew Paras
