Adjusting to a temporary normal.

Now that we’re almost a week into the switch to delivery only, we’d like to give you an update on how it’s going so far.

We’re committed to keeping our kitchen open and serving you in this time of uncertainty. However, due to various factors beyond our control, some of you have experienced slow, or lack of, response to your delivery orders.

Because we use a third-party delivery system, The Chicago Diner is reliant on their capacity and evolving regulations during this medical outbreak. We ask for your patience and understanding.

Thank you for supporting The Chicago Diner, and we will try to do whatever we can to support you.

Be and stay well,
Michael, Mickey, Chef Jose, and the rest of our crew.

Caviar Delivery service daily, 12PM to 8PM until March 30.

Caviar has extended our delivery range up to 10-miles of our locations. Please check your app to see if you're within range. More delivery details are available on our website.

Also, Caviar is waiving delivery fees for us at this time but please don't forget to tip your drivers. They rely on tips the same way our wait staff does within our restaurants.

Note about carryouts and curbside pickups.
Out of an abundance of caution for our staff, we are not offering carryouts or curbside pickups at this time. Thank you for your understanding.

Breaking bread at the dinner table.

Having to stay at home or shelter in place means we have an opportunity to reconnect with family during dinnertime. One-pot meals and casseroles are a great way to do that. What’s better than a big warm centerpiece with side salads and bread? Leftovers of course! Double this recipe to ensure you have leftovers for lunches throughout this week.

Shepherd’s Pie

A hearty comfort food, just as satisfying as the original but without the meat. Goes great with gravy on top.

Yield: 4–6 servings

Filling:
8 ounces tempeh, cubed
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon tamari
1 medium onion, chopped
1 stalk celery, chopped
½ pound mushrooms, sliced
3 small carrots, chopped
1 bay leaf
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon sage
½ teaspoon thyme
½ teaspoon basil
2 cups cooked lentils

Topping:
3 or 4 potatoes, peeled and boiled until tender
½ –1 cup soymilk, unsweetened and plain
1 tablespoon olive oil
salt, nutmeg, and black pepper to taste
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. In a medium saucepan, sauté the tempeh with the oil and tamari until tempeh starts to brown. Continue sautéing, adding onion, celery, mushrooms, and carrots. Stir in remaining filling ingredients except lentils.
  3. When carrots are tender, add lentils. Stir and simmer until the liquid has evaporated. Remove bay leaf.
  4. In a medium bowl mash the potatoes with olive oil and soymilk. Add salt, nutmeg, and pepper to taste. Set aside.
  5. Pour the vegetable-lentil mixture into a lightly oiled 10-inch pie pan or a 3- to 4-quart casserole and top with the mashed potatoes.
  6. Bake 25 to 30 minutes.

Gift cards are a great way to help your favorite restaurants survive during this trouble time.

Gift cards, cookbooks, and t-shirts are available at our online store and are also a great way to help us survive this troubled time. We're including some of our recipes in the emails this week and next but many more are available in our cookbook.

Reminder of staff GoFundMe pages.

Every effort is being made to keep as many of our beloved employees gainfully employed, with as much work as possible. We’ve not only increased hourly pay for our front of house staff, but have maintained hours for back of house and kitchen staff employees. For some of our employees, it is simply best to file for unemployment and we’ve connected them with all the resources to do so. Finally, we’re matching $5,000 to each GoFundMe page set up by employees of our locations at Logan Square and Halsted and encourage you to support them as well.
