AdLit Beat: All About Adolescent Literacy

“You may be born into a family, but you walk into friendships. Some you’ll discover you should put behind you. Others are worth every risk.”
— Adam Silvera

Hi AdLit Beat Readers,
September is a month of celebration and reflection. A new school year and Hispanic Heritage month have begun but so have Suicide Prevention month and school safety drills. We are reminded of the power of connecting with students and the importance of friendships, acceptance, and inclusion in the lives of adolescents.

Speak Soon,

For the Love of Reading: Hispanic Heritage Month

In this booklist, you’ll find a range of titles — young adult and middle grade novels by award-winning authors, bilingual poetry, biography, memoir — celebrating Latinx culture and examining the immigrant experience.

In the Classroom: Frayer Model

Sometimes the simplest things have the most impact. Frayer Models have been used for decades in classrooms because they promote critical thinking and can be used across disciplines to support students' deep understanding of vocabulary and content.

Teaching Tip: As with any tool, the more opportunities students have to use them, the more proficient they become at using them to support their understanding. Talk to colleagues about implementing a Frayer Model approach across disciplines or even across or between grade levels!

Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among people age 15-24. As September is Suicide Prevention Month, we are reminded of the importance of not shying away from tough conversations and topics with our students and kids.
