| The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has just issued a Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) to request applications for administrative supplements to current active NIH grants to investigate the underlying mechanisms of long-term effects of COVID-19. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health is participating in this initiative. The due date for applications is Monday, January 24, 2022. The effects to be studied can include symptoms that persist after recovery from the initial stages of COVID-19 (often called long COVID), as well as new symptoms that arise after initial infection. Supported research is expected to inform the diagnosis, prevention, mitigation, and/or treatment of post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) through elucidating the pathogenesis of sequelae and identification of associated mechanistic pathways. This could include studies involving nonhuman primate or other animal models. Applications proposing to conduct clinical trials are not appropriate for this initiative, but supplements to existing clinical trials are allowed. However, supplement funding may only be used to support pathobiology research activities, as described in the NOSI. |
