Situational Analysis | October 26, 2023 It's Thursday and National Pumpkin Day! ð The 2nd Congressional District debate between Celeste Maloy and Kathleen Riebe is tonight at 6 pm. What You Need to Know - After 22 days without one, the U.S. House has a speaker: Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana. Johnson, who was the vice chairman of the House GOP conference, voted against certifying the results of the 2020 election and filed an amicus brief in support of a lawsuit before the Supreme Court alleging widespread voter fraud during that election. Utah Sen. Mike Lee is a big fan, while Sen. Mitt Romney quipped: âApparently experience isnât necessary for the speaker job." Johnson has an intense to-do list, including keeping the government open, and voting on aid to Israel and Ukraine.
- A mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine has left at least 16 dead (some sources say 22) and more than 50 injured as a man identified as Robert Card shot people in a restaurant and a bowling alley. Card was described as a firearms instructor believed to be in the Army Reserve and had been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks in the summer of 2023. Police are still searching for Card. Itâs the 36th mass killing in the United States this year.
- The U.S. economy grew by an annual rate of 4.9 percent in the third quarter, the strongest pace since 2021, as spending â by families, businesses and the government â accelerated, even in the face of fast-rising borrowing costs. Consumer spending rose at an annual rate of 4% in the 3rd quarter.
