| Well, happy new year friends. I trust your 2023 is going well. What’s not going so well? News of the recent LastPass data breach. Uh oh. Let's talk about it. | |
| Here's your quick rundown of what happened: Just before Christmas, LastPass announced that hackers had gotten their hands on customers’ password vaults. The stolen data includes unencrypted data like billing addresses and email addresses. It also includes encrypted data like website usernames and passwords. Cybercriminals behind the intrusion “may attempt to use brute force to guess your master password and decrypt the copies of vault data they took.” | |
| Here's why I think this matters to IT. Change your passwords. Not just your LastPass master password, either. All the passwords stored in your vault. It won't undo the breach, but it's a good step. As cybersecurity expert Graham Cluley points out: “Cybercriminals now know that you use LastPass, they know how to contact you, and they know which websites you use. That’s valuable information for anyone attempting to phish further information from you.” And as TechCrunch says: “It’s a good reminder that not all password managers are created equal and can be attacked, or compromised, in different ways.” | |
