Aging rec centers need upgrades

According to a BREC System Master Plan update, nearly half the recreation centers in Baton Rouge are currently labeled in "poor" condition due to aging infrastructure and lack of air conditioning.

BREC Superintendent Corey Wilson says 25 of the 56 centers do not have air conditioning.

And adding air conditioning is not an easy — or inexpensive — fix. 


The menhaden fishing industry in Louisiana could suffer $31 million in losses under new state rules to restrict the operations within a mile of the coast, a new report from state economists states.

Fish and Wildlife proposed the wider buffer after menhaden fishing companies spilled an estimated 850,000 fish in the waters off Cameron Parish in September.

By pound, menhaden are by far the state’s largest commercial catch.
