When Ahmed Hussen was 16, he fled Somalia’s civil war and arrived in Canada as a refugee. His first home here was a social-housing unit on Hess Street in Hamilton that he shared with his cousin. Hussen, who was elected to Parliament in 2015 and appointed minister of housing and diversity and inclusion last October, knows what it means to be faced with a precarious housing situation.
