If Salt Lake City gets a big league baseball team, what should it be called?
The baseball season is long over but spring training is right around the corner. So what better time to speculate on potential major league expansion sites and, more specifically, on possible team names, uniforms and color schemes?
For that, some have turned to artificial intelligence.
This week, a website called Solitaire Bliss crafted names, jerseys and mascots for more than 40 cities worldwide without an MLB, NBA, NHL or MLS team using the AI language model ChatGPT and the AI image-generator Stable Diffusion XL. Salt Lake City was included for both baseball and hockey.

During the PBS Utah Governor’s Monthly News Conference in December, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox lifted up a Millcreek school as an example where cellphone restrictions have been successful. Cox wants all Utah public schools to follow suit.
“We all know that cellphones are a distraction and when we put phones away we can actually focus and study,” Cox said in a press release Wednesday.
“Cellphone-free learning environments will help our teachers teach and our students learn. We want to give our schools every opportunity to succeed and so I hope our local school districts and charter schools will join me in this effort to keep phones in backpacks or lockers during class time,” he said.

Alex Smith was only a backup quarterback when he began his sophomore season at Utah, but the team’s defense began to see what the future held. Kyle Whittingham, the defensive coordinator at the time, still remembers — 20 years later — that Smith made life difficult for his defense in practice.
“As soon as Alex got control of the offense, we were lights out. I remember after he started playing full time, we coaches were wondering, how did we not see that? We were trying to figure that one out,” Whittingham said.
This week it was announced that Smith will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. No Utah player has ever been voted into the Hall (Ike Armstrong was inducted as a coach in 1957).
