House committee advances pension bill intended to benefit Alaska police, firefighters The Alaska House Committee on Community and Regional Affairs has approved a bill that would create a state pension program for police and firefighters. The committee voted 4-2 on Thursday morning to advance the bill, House Bill 22, to the House State Affairs Committee, the second of four committees slated to hear the bill. Assigning a bill to four committees usually kills it because the time needed for each committee to consider it means there isn't enough time for the bill to advance to a floor vote. The quick advance through the regional affairs committee changes that calculus slightly, and the Alaska Senate is considering separate legislation. Rep. Andy Josephson, D-Anchorage and the bill's sponsor, has said the House bill is critical to help departments recruit and retain employees. ANCHORAGE PRESS PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Large fire destroys American Legion in Illinois VIDEO/PHOTOS: A large fire broke out Thursday morning at the American Legion post in New Haven, Illinois. Post 1141 shared photos of blaze, which appear to have destroyed the building. Their caption just says "No words!!!" Many residents shared comments with memories. "My parent met there," said Melissa Blake Kittinger. "It is a sad day for New Haven and this whole area! My dad and I played pool there every Sunday. We hope they will be able to rebuild. It was as much a community center as it was an American Legion Post," said Wade Atteberry. "In New Haven, Illinois, a gaping hole on the hill where American Legion Post 1141 once stood. Inside the burned out building remains pieces of the Legion's history, but for some it's more than memorabilia items. The once polished and waxed hardwood floor was where some of the young generations learned to walk, spent many hours laughing, playing with ketchup smeared smiles as families gathered," said Terri Buckman Stallings." WFIE-TV NBC 14 EVANSVILLE Decade after 'Good Friday miracle' jet crash, Virginia firefighters grapple with cancer diagnoses At age 44, there are days when Virginia Beach Fire Captain Matt Chiaverotti doesn't have the energy to pick himself up from his recliner that sits by his living room window. Cancer is making him weak. On Aug. 23 of last year, he got a grim diagnosis: late-stage anaplastic thyroid cancer, a rare disease making up 1% to 2% of thyroid cancer cases. "It started in my thyroid [and] looked like it spread to my lungs and other spots," Chiaverotti said. "They ended up finding it days later in my brain." He is not alone. Four other Virginia Beach firefighters are currently battling or recently battled cancer. All five worked what has been dubbed the "Good Friday Miracle," a Navy FA-18 jet crash nearly 11 years ago into the Mayfair Mews Apartments on Good Friday 2012. It's called a miracle because no one perished in the fiery collision that demolished the complex. WVEC-TV ABC 13 HAMPTON Pennsylvania fire crews speak on growing problems of false alarms We all hear and see them in our community virtually every day, fire trucks and first responders responding to fire calls. Many times, those calls turn out to be false alarms and fire officials across the nation and our region say they have seen the number of false alarms increasing and that's creating an unnecessary risk to the public and first responders. Wilkes-Barre Fire Chief Jay Delaney is one of the chiefs in our region and Pennsylvania sounding the alarm and trying taking action to try to reduce the numbers and reduce the risk to the public and first responders. "At least two million across the United States every year. Here in Wilkes-Barre in the year 2021, we had 577 false alarms," said Chief Delaney. Chief Delaney says that 577 times that the public and first responders were unnecessarily placed at risk. WBRE-TV NBC 28 WILKES-BARRE Follow Up: FDNY lieutenant thanks fallen firefighter William Moon's widow for life-saving organ An FDNY lieutenant received a life-saving lung transplant from fallen firefighter William "Billy" Moon — and, in a heartfelt tribute from his hospital bed, thanked the hero's widow for donating her late husband's organs. Lt. Terrence Jordan is among five people — and two members of New York's Bravest — to whom Moon's organs were donated after the 47-year-old dad of two died during a training accident at his Brooklyn firehouse in December. In an exclusive report set to air on "NBC Nightly News" Thursday at 6:30 p.m. ET, Jordan told Moon's widow, Kristina, that he feels 30 years younger after coming out of surgery with a new pair of healthy lungs. "We just wanted to say that we think you're an incredible person and thank you so much," Jordan told Kristina Moon from the hospital, with his wife by his side. NEW YORK POST - METERED SITE Texas fire truck stolen from motel as its crew treated patient, department says VIDEO: A Fort Worth Fire Department truck was stolen on Wednesday night in south Fort Worth while the members of its crew were treating a patient, the department said. A person purloined Engine 17 from the Delux Inn near South Freeway and East Seminary Drive. Its crew arrived at the motel at 7:42 p.m. and began to treat a medical problem, a fire department spokesperson said. Nine minutes later, someone entered the motel lobby and told the firefighters that their truck had just been stolen. The crew stepped outside and watched as the engine was driven away. They requested police. The fire department spokesperson did not answer a question that asked by what method the suspect accessed the apparatus. The truck was taken out of service while an investigation is underway. The crew of Engine 17 will work from a reserve apparatus. The fire department was working with police to investigate the theft.
