PHOTOS: A fire tore through a small Peter Pan Seafoods facility in Sand Point Wednesday morning. Edith Mejia, the office manager and a dispatcher for the small Aleutian Islands town's police department, said the fire likely started between 7 and 8 a.m. Wednesday. "The town smells like burning plastic – it's really bad outside," she said. "You can smell it from here, and I'm really far away from them." Mejia said the smell of burning plastic came from fishing gear, like nets and line that are kept at Peter Pan's building. The facility is not a fish processing plant, but a stock room and bookkeeping space. Employees range from two to four, seasonally. Both the warehouse and nearby stock room were involved in the fire, according to a press release from Peter Pan. The company said there were no injuries.  

Capital City Fire Rescue responded to a working structure fire in a 6-plex on Hayes Way. The fire was located in the crawl space and the walls. Crews on the scene are chasing down hot spots and void spaces. All occupants are out of the residence and there are no injuries.  

Families were forced out of their homes after a massive fire broke out early Friday morning in DeKalb County. DeKalb Fire crews responded just after 4 a.m. They say flames ripped through three homes on the 1000 block of Lenox Park Boulevard NE in Brookhaven. Officials say these are large homes that are very close together. "Inside the space is so compact, I don't know if when you guys arrived you saw we had units parked in the street. We just didn't want everybody bottlenecking in the inside. So, it's very limited space-wise," said Christopher Morrison, assistant fire chief for DeKalb Fire and Rescue. Atlanta News First spoke with the homeowner of the house that first caught fire. She told us that she and her husband were at their lake house when her Ring security camera app went off.  

The FDNY says it busted an illegal lithium-ion battery operation in Queens. Wilson's Electric Scooters and Sales along Queens Boulevard in Rego Park is where the FDNY says it shut down an illegal lithium-ion manufacturing operation. "Nobody teach me. They don't do nothing but take money, give me ticket," owner Wilson Chen said. "We want to make good quality battery for sale, so we need the sample to apply for UL license." "They recovered approximately 60 battery packs and hundreds of individual lithium-ion cells. Approximately 25 e-scooters and 25 combination electric and gas mopeds were also recovered," FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said. Kavanagh said on Tuesday the FDNY's Lithium-Ion Task Force discovered the business was building battery packs from individual battery cells and replacing old ones in violation of the fire code, creating "Frankenstein batteries."

Mayorkas traveled this week to Las Vegas to review U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) operations for Super Bowl LVIII with state and local law enforcement and the National Football League (NFL).
