Anchorage Fire Chief Jodie Hettrick is retiring this summer During Wednesday's Assembly Public Safety Committee meeting, it was announced that along with Anchorage Police Department Chief Justin Doll, Anchorage Fire Department Fire Chief Jodie Hettrick is also retiring. Hettrick was the first woman chief at AFD. She was appointed by former Mayor Ethan Berkowitz in 2018 following the retirement of longtime chief Denis LeBlanc. Hettrick joined AFD in 2012 and served as assistant chief and deputy chief before her eventual promotion. Hettrick's last day will be June 30 with the Municipality of Anchorage. "She has done a fabulous job as a female and I am sorry to see her go," said Celeste Hodge Growden, president of the Alaska Black Caucus during the public comment portion of the meeting. "I just think it's important that we recognize the accomplishments of women because unfortunately so often that is overlooked." KTVA-TV CBS 11 ANCHORAGE PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

6 firefighters hurt battling massive blaze that tore through strip of stores in New York VIDEO: Half a dozen firefighters were hurt battling an overnight Queens fire that ripped through a strip of shops, burning for over four hours overnight, the FDNY said. According to fire officials, they got a call just before 11 p.m. Thursday for a fire at 37-54 74th Street, a long strip of single-floor businesses in Jackson Heights. Units arrived within minutes to find heavy flames burning in a restaurant at the location, authorities said. The fire started in the basement and extended to the cockloft, or the upper level above the ceiling, and spread to numerous stores down the block, the FDNY said.Video from the scene showed large flames shooting from the roof of the building. It appeared the stores were all closed at the time of the blaze. Fire officials said nearly 170 firefighters responded to the blaze, which reached four-alarm status before it was finally put under control just after 4 a.m. Friday. WPIX-TV CW 11 NEW YORK Firefighter makes history as highest ranking woman in Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire VIDEO: During Women's History Month, a firefighter in Pittsburgh is making her own type of history by becoming the highest-ranking female in the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire. Kari Burnham said, "This is something I love to do. It's like a dream come true." Burnham's passion is being a firefighter. Now she takes the title of lieutenant, which is an accomplishment that puts her in the history books as the highest-ranking woman in the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire. "It's kind of crazy for me. I'll probably go home and think what just happened," said Burnham. Pittsburgh fire Chief Darryl Jones said the bureau currently has five female firefighters. He said the last time a woman was promoted to lieutenant was 1995 and that's been too long of a wait. Jones said, "It is way overdue and to be quite frank with you an embarrassment that it's taken 25 years to do this." WTAE-TV ABC 4 PITTSBURGH West Virginia city remembers heroes who died in 1949 Woolworth fire VIDEO: Thursday marked 72 years since the Charleston Fire Department lost seven of their crew members in the tragic Woolworth fire. The City of Charleston joined the Charleston Fire Department and the Charleston Firefighter's Local Union 317 to honor those seven who died in a special ceremony this morning. The Woolworth Building, located on the corner of Quarrier and Capitol streets caught fire in the early morning hours of March 4, 1949. While battling the blaze, seven firefighters died and at least 15 additional firefighters were injured, two critically. "These guys paid the ultimate sacrifice for the citizens of Charleston 72 years ago, so it's good that we, you know, the brotherhood of the fire service remembers the fallen. And it's good to teach our young firefighters we have here today our traditions and when we're gone, they're still continuing our traditions of honoring those who paid the ultimate sacrifice," said Myron Boggess, president of the IAFF Local 317. WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY New Google.org COVID-19 database could hold key to disease's mysteries A year into the pandemic, COVID-19 still puzzles researchers, but the public release of a new database may help scientists solve some of the mysteries lingering around this devastating disease. An international team of researchers from institutions including Boston Children's Hospital, Northeastern University and the University of Oxford has partnered with Google.org, Google's nonprofit subsidiary, to release Global.health, a platform that contains information about almost 10 million COVID-19 cases from over 100 countries. The goal, researchers said, is to help scientists across the globe answer a wide range of questions, from measuring the impact of newly emerged virus variants on different age groups, including children, to understanding how likely a public response is to help curb spread in certain areas.
