No injuries reported in Fairbanks log home fire A two-story log home in Fairbanks was reported as a total loss Wednesday after a fire had started in the garage. State Troopers in Fairbanks had received the report of a structure fire at 484 Hirn Road in Two Rivers. When troopers arrived, along with the Alaska Forestry Service, they found the two-story log home fully engulfed. A trooper investigation revealed that the homeowner was fueling his vehicle inside an attached garage when the fire began. The homeowner became ill from the fumes and exited the garage where he briefly lost consciousness, and When the homeowner regained consciousness, he observed the home to be on fire, according to the dispatch. The Alaska Forestry Service utilized an Alaska Army National Guard CH-47 Chinook helicopter equipped with a water drop bucket to provide water suppression to ensure the fire did not spread. Troopers said the structure was a total loss. KINY-AM 800 / FM 94.9 JUNEAU Capital City Fire and Rescue plans to acquire two new fire engines, ladder truck to arrive next month Capital City Fire and Rescue are looking at getting two new fire engines, as well as another new ladder truck, but it'll be a while. The new ladder truck the department has been in the process of acquiring for the last two years is anticipated to arrive in Juneau next month, Fire Marshal Dan Jager said while a guest on Action Line. Jager said the production and manufacturing of the truck, currently being undertaken in Wisconsin, will be wrapping up by the end of May. "I imagine we're going to have a big, community-wide open house type thing where people come by the station and check it out," he said. "It's going to be new, it's new for us, not only because it's a brand new piece of equipment, but it's a type of equipment we've never had before." KINY-AM 800 / FM 94.9 JUNEAU Opinion: First responder retirement reforms will help Alaska retain talent, save money The Alaska State Legislature changed to the current retirement system in 2005 in response to an alleged $5 billion gap between what the state was collecting and what it needed to pay for the state's pension fund. The state's actuary had miscalculated how much money would be needed, then hid the miscalculation from the state. The state sued the actuary, but that didn't solve the issue with pensions. Rather than adjust pension payments to cover the gap, the Legislature ended the pension program and created a new "defined-contribution" system, similar to a 401(k). We still paid benefits to people who had already earned them, but starting July 1, 2006, new state employees were put into the new defined-contribution system. Many Alaskans warned that the new retirement system would make recruitment more difficult — and unfortunately, they were right. Recruitment and retention issues plague state agencies, including police, fire and emergency medical services. ANCHORAGE DAILY NEWS - METERED SITE PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Dump truck crashes into ODOT vehicle on northern Ohio highway Two drivers were taken to a hospital after a dump truck crashed into the back of an Ohio Department of Transportation vehicle on a northern Ohio interstate Thursday morning. Before 7:20 a.m., an ODOT worker was headed to pick up a street sweeper from another location and had pulled his truck over on the way when he noticed trash on the side of the highway. He was still inside the cab, when a dump truck veered off, crashing without appearing to slow down. "Here's a guy doing his job…going above and beyond you know," said District 4 Deputy Gery Noirot during a Thursday afternoon news conference. "Behind me is the result of that accident…" he said, gesturing to a burned-out vehicle. The force pushed the burning trucks down an embankment near Green's Graybill Road, in the northbound lanes, as other drivers pulled over to help. WBNS-TV CBS 10 COLUMBUS Commentary: Wisconsin's great butter and cheese fire of 1991 PHOTOS: I admit that I didn't remember, but my friend Lois Seymour did, that it was the 30th anniversary of a monstrous fire that broke out on May 3, 1991, at Madison's Central Storage & Warehouse Co.. It was later proclaimed to have been Madison's biggest fire ever by fire department officials. The fire at the huge food storage facility on Cottage Grove Road and Highway 51/151 in east Madison was later attributed to a forklift battery malfunction. The resulting blaze at the sprawling 500,000 square foot site took more than a week to extinguish because of burning insulation and some 20 million pounds of what we referred to as "government butter, cheese and meat". Madison Fire Department Chief Steven Davis had been with Madison Fire Department for just a couple years. WISCONSIN STATE FARMER Ukranian firefighters head to Florida for Firefighter Combat Challenge The toughest two minutes in sports will be hosted in Martin County this weekend. The Firefighter Combat Challenge is a grueling course that requires strength and endurance and showcases skills that firefighters use every day. The free-to-attend contest will be held Saturday and Sunday at Stuart Beach and is a regional qualifying event for the national competition scheduled to take place in Fort Pierce in September. Both Treasure Coast competitions are the only ones in Florida this year. The number one team in the world from Ukraine will be competing this weekend. The Treasure Coast Sports Commission was able to setup their arrival after the two-man crew took a train to Poland and then flew to Turkey and then to Florida. Both men said they had to take a break from training to help save people during the war, but now are in Martin County ready to represent their home country. WFLX-TV FOX 29 PALM BEACH Rising USFL star was preparing to be firefighter before getting drafted Birmingham Stallions linebacker Scooby Wright III has been one of the breakout stars of the inaugural United States Football League season. Through four games, the Stallions are undefeated. Wright has recorded 32 tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles and two passes defended to help Birmingham. Wright was the Stallions' first selection in the inside linebackers portion of the USFL Draft in February. He told Fox News Digital in a recent interview he graduated from a firefighting academy in California and was volunteering before he decided to put the pads and helmet on again. He had been two years removed from a short stint with the XFL, which ended due to the coronavirus pandemic. "After the XFL ended in 2020 in the pandemic, I went home to Northern California and I started taking firefighting prerequisite classes for the firefighting academy," Wright said.
