VIDEO: Authorities say a truck driver suffered "non-life-threatening injuries" after the semi they were driving went off the road and ended up in the Turnagain Arm water along the Seward Highway. According to Anchorage police, the semi-truck ran off the road around mile 82.5, just north of Twentymile River. No other vehicles were involved. The family of Travis Corgan confirmed with Alaska's News Source that Corgan was the driver of the truck that went into the water. According to Girdwood Fire and Rescue, who were responsible for Corgan's rescue, he was the only person in the semi-truck at the time of the crash. The truck was transporting empty fishing totes. Additionally, bad weather and the removal of a section of guardrail due to construction in the area are thought to have played a factor.

The all-clear came at 8 p.m. Akron Mayor Shammas Malik earlier Thursday said there were no air quality or chemical concerns outside the evacuation zone as fire officials continued to battle a large chemical fire at SMB Products on Rosemary Boulevard. Fire crews were first called to the business at about 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, encountering black smoke and flames. SMB Products provides chemical packaging services for aerosols and liquids. Chemicals burning in the fire include methanol, propane and xylene. "Due to the nature of the chemicals present and the extent of the flames, fire companies used a defensive mode for approaching the fire," reads a Thursday evening update from the Akron Fire Department.  

The New York City Fire Department has lost dozens of members this past year to diseases related to rescue-and-recovery work after Sept. 11, 2001, pushing the department over a grim threshold: More FDNY responders have now died from 9/11-related diseases than were killed on the day of the attack. "Our list of heroes grows each year," said FDNY Acting Chief John Esposito at a solemn ceremony Wednesday during which 32 of the most recent deaths were added to the FDNY World Trade Center Memorial Wall. On Sept. 11, 2001, 343 FDNY responders were killed, many as they rushed into burning, collapsing skyscrapers to try to save lives. Since that day, 363 more have died of illnesses related to the toxic work of digging through rubble looking for survivors and recovering the deceased, including fellow firefighters, according to the FDNY.  

VIDEO: After nearly six hours, Los Angeles firefighters saved a construction worker who fell into an 8-foot deep trench in Los Feliz — a rescue mission carried out during a sweltering, triple-digit heat wave. The man was left in serious condition and had to be taken to a hospital by paramedics while two firefighters were treated at the scene for heat exhaustion, with one ultimately taken to a hospital, according to the LA Fire Department. When firefighters responded just before 11 a.m., the man was conscious and alert but was surrounded by dirt up to his shoulders inside a trench in the back of a hillside home, the LA Fire Department said in an alert Thursday morning. He was at a construction site at a house in the 2300 block of Catalina Street.  

VIDEO: This is a busy time for college students new and old. It can be extremely dangerous if students aren't given the proper training. Just last Sunday, a fire started in a dorm room at UMass. The cause: a burning candle left unattended. While no one was injured, that isn't always the case. A 21-year-old died in an off-campus apartment fire in 2013. September has more college campus fires than any other month according to the Department of Fire Services. Tony Spear, a lieutenant with the West Springfield Fire Department, described how new college students should handle a very common scenario. "If you're in a dorm room you might have a bunch of people in there. Just be aware of where you are. Make sure you're aware of the exits to the buildings. Make sure you're aware of what you've got going on in the buildings," said Spear.
