Kwethluk Fire: 5th Observation Flight Predicts 9,693 acre Fire Running Out of Fuel and Into Natural Barriers Friday afternoon at 4:15pm, DOF's aerial mapping specialist Matt Snyder took his fifth observation flight of the now 9,693 acre Kwethluk Fire (fire #012) burning in the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. Snyder, based at the DOF station in McGrath, has worked in rural Alaska as a wildland firefighter for over 10 years and has expertise in southwest Alaska. During the time of the flight, winds were out of the east at 5-10 mph, temperature was 45F with 100% cloud cover, and the active perimeter was just 10% moving to the southeast. Snyder noted in his surveillance report: "Forward spread of the fire to the west has halted due to natural barriers. All fire activity is on the southeast flank with the fire backing into the wind and surrounded by natural barriers. AK FIRE INFO Airport disaster drill tests Wrangell's emergency response Wrangell's volunteer firefighters and state transportation officials held an airport disaster drill Wednesday (April 20) to prepare for the worst. Wrangell grade-schoolers and other community members pitched in as responders and volunteer victims for the drill, held once every three years. Cries for help rang through the air as afternoon shadows lengthened along the gravel pit at the north end of Wrangell's airport. Around 30 people – mostly Wrangell students – were scattered around the rocks, seemingly covered in bruises and blood. Closer inspection, though, showed the bloody noses and head wounds were made with doctored chocolate syrup. The "bones" peeking out from ankles and thighs were actually scraps of wood, glued in place and doused in syrupy fake blood. And all the volunteers had beige cards strung around their necks with their ailments written out: Head laceration. Contusions. Disoriented. Resp rate 28. KSTK-FM 101.7 WRANGELL PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

2 Dead Including Firefighter In New York House Fire, Ceiling Collapse VIDEO: A six-year veteran of the FDNY and a civilian died Sunday in a Brooklyn house fire that trapped a team of firefighters after a partial ceiling collapse, city officials said. Firefighter Timothy Klein, 31, was one of more than 100 FDNY members responding to the Avenue N residence in Canarsie — that caught fire shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday — when conditions turned deadly. A second body was later recovered but could not be identified, the NYPD said. Hours earlier, city officials at a press briefing said one resident of the home could not be located. Firefighters were inside the residence when its deteriorating structure prompted officials to call for an evacuation, Acting Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said. Before they could do so, Klein and three other FDNY members became trapped when part of the ceiling collapsed. WNBC-TV NBC 4 NEW YORK Related with Video: FDNY mourns firefighter killed in Brooklyn blaze VIDEO: When Oregon's State Capitol burned to the ground in 1935 It was just before 7 p.m. on April 25, 1935, when Salem residents noticed smoke coming from the Oregon State Capitol building. The city fire department arrived on the scene in minutes, but their equipment couldn't reach the source of the blaze somewhere in the basement. Firefighters fought from a distance as flames engulfed walls and jumped floors. Just an hour after firefighters arrived, the iconic bronze dome topping the building crashed to the ground. Hundreds, then thousands, of residents gathered to watch as the fire burned throughout the night. When morning came, all that remained was a skeleton of broken walls enclosing a mass of blackened debris. The Oregon State Capitol was gone. By the time the smoke cleared, the fire had caused nearly a million dollars worth of property damage and destroyed priceless state records. It also left one firefighter dead. Eighteen-year-old Floyd McMullen had been a college student working at the east Salem firehouse in exchange for lodging. OREGON PUBLIC BROADCASTING Fallen Maryland Firefighters Get An Earth Day Tree Mayor Brandon Scott said on Saturday that he was filled with joy after watching the community come together to celebrate the lives of three Baltimore firefighters who died while battling a house fire in January. Scott made the comment in a social media post after planting a tree at Harlem Park Elementary/Middle School to honor fallen firefighters Lt. Paul Butrim, Lt. Kelsey Sadler, and Kenny Lacayo in West Baltimore on Earth Day. Scott was joined by students from Baltimore City Public Schools, volunteers, Baltimore City Fire Department Chief Niles Ford, and Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) Director Jason Mitchell, according to DPW staff. DPW collaborated with Harlem Park Elementary/Middle School and Bluford Drew Jemison STEM Academy School on the Earth Day festivities, which took place in the 1400 block of Lafayette Avenue, staff said. Dan Freiberg is a captain with the Goodyear Fire Department and traveled to Ukraine as a volunteer with Team Rubicon, a nonprofit organization that uses the skills and experience of military veterans and first responders to provide aid during disasters and humanitarian crises across the globe. Freiberg's team of 22 people established a clinic at a camp for internally displaced people and worked with the mayor of a Ukrainian city to coordinate shuttling those in need from 15 other camps to receive treatment of physical and mental ailments. "My job was to make sure we were using our team to the highest level of effectiveness," Freiberg said in a press release from the city.
