There will be more tundra fires as the climate continues to warm: ‘That's a sure thing' In June, the largest tundra fire the region has ever seen ripped through the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. Life is now going back to normal for residents who live near the site of the fire, but people should expect more frequent tundra fires in coming years as the climate continues to change. Elder Sophie Beans stands in her wooden house near the banks of the Andreafsky River. It's lush and green outside, but just a few miles away the earth is scorched. "See right here is our camp, and it burned," Beans said, gesturing to the wall and a vintage photo of her cabin, nestled into a spruce grove about five miles upriver from her main home. Those spruce trees burned down and the surrounding tundra is black after a massive fire ripped through about two months ago. KTOO-FM 104.3 JUNEAU Follow Up: All charges have been dismissed against Adam Andrew in Bethel apartment complex fire All charges have been dropped against Adam Andrew, the person originally charged in the fire that killed three at the AVCP housing apartment complex. Andrew had been charged with three counts of murder in the second degree and one count of arson. He faced an additional seven felonies and six misdemeanor counts. According to court documents, Bethel Police Department Investigator Skyler Smith had testimony from just one eyewitness: a 15-year-old who said that he saw Andrew start the fire on Aug. 12 at around 4 a.m. The prosecutor for the case, Chris Knowles, would not say whether the fire was being investigated as arson or whether they were looking at other causes. However, he did say there is still an active investigation and that the Bethel Police Department is still investigating all leads. KYUK-AM 640 BETHEL PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Explosion after explosion: Massive fire at Massachusetts boat yard destroys buildings, cars, boats Crews battled a massive fire Friday afternoon that has destroyed buildings, cars and vessels at a boat yard in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts. At least one person was hurt and an unknown number of firefighters suffered minor injuries, officials said. The fire broke out at about 2 p.m. Friday at the Mattapoisett Boatyard on Ned's Point. The brother of an employee and witnesses told WCVB there was a series of explosions before the flames and black smoke consumed the entire property. "All of a sudden, black smoke. Thick, thick, thick black smoke. So, we sat there for a while, and we just kept hearing bangs — explosion after explosion. I mean, in an hour, there had to have been 50 explosions just going off and off," said one witness. When Sky 5 arrived over the scene, multiple buildings, several boats and about two dozen cars were in flames or burned-out shells. "The Barstow fire department had a memorial created to pay tribute to their firefighting comrades who died in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. A large fiberglass FDNY fire helmet replica sits next to the Barstow Fire District Headquarters, the Roadside America reports. "The helmet is stylishly topped by a golden eagle's head, and the number on the shield is "343." That's how many members of the New York City fire department lost their lives in the collapse of the World Trade Center towers. WORLD RECORD ACADEMY 'I call them family': Georgia fire department helps teen fight for his dream VIDEO: 18-year-old Garry Mitchem has always dreamed of becoming a firefighter for Baldwin county. His disability doesn't stop him from achieving that dream, or helping his community. "I love this fire department, I love Milledgeville, I love both the county and the community," he said. He also said he's the fire department's biggest fan, and he his love for it comes from his dad. "He was a firefighter from Dekalb county from 1966 all through 1997," Mitchem said. Garry wants to follow in his dad's footsteps, but in the mean time he spends his time listening to the fire department scanner. "Every time there is an accident or a fire, I post online to let the community know when a call comes out for an accident or a structure fire, or any type of fire," Mitchem said. Garry has Prader Willi Syndrome, which is a rare genetic disorder that causes physical, mental, and behavioral problems. WMAZ-TV CBS 13 MACON New Jersey fire department graduates first-ever class of Junior Public Safety Academy PHOTOS: From tears to triumph. That was the journey for one history-making group of city teens this summer. The inaugural class of the Trenton Junior Public Safety Academy learned firsthand that being a first-responder means hard work and dedication even just to learn the skills needed for the job. Created by Fire Director Kenneth Douglas and lead instructor Brian Roberts, the Trenton Fire Department set out to make a program that pushes kids past their comfort zones but also gives them skills and experience that can benefit them long after the summer program ends. "He didn't just want to run a summer camp, he wanted it to be a Junior Public Safety Academy," Roberts told The Trentonian. "The kids come in here and they learn, but they also have a good time in the summertime." TRENTONIAN New Mexico State Police chase stolen fire truck VIDEO: A fire truck was stolen earlier this week in Corrales. Now, New Mexico State Police has shared video of the chase and the arrest that followed. Video posted by state police on Facebook shows the stolen fire truck heading west on I-40, a short time after it was stolen while responding to a medical call. Corrales fire officials were worried. "We were very concerned for the safety of people, and its lights and sirens are going," said Tanya Lattin with the Corrales Fire Department. "We were very concerned about the possibility it might try to drive down the wrong side of the road." More than an hour west of Albuquerque, Laguna police deployed stop strips and finally got the driver to pull over into a gas station parking lot. Pictures show the truck and the blown tire – after the suspect drove into a wall. KOB-TV NBC 4 ALBUQUERQUE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
