| Coast Guard sees high volume of medevac requests in Alaska VIDEO: Semper Paratus — always ready. Those are the words the United States Coast Guard lives by. "This is the mission we're up here to do," District 17 Search and Rescue Manager Jennifer Whitcomb said. Since 2019, the Coast Guard has seen an increasing number of requests from the public for medevac services each fiscal year. This year shows a similar trend — from Oct. 1 of 2022 to June 15 of 2023, the Coast Guard has received 222 total requests. The Coast Guard responded with assistance to 163 of those requests. "We're on pace to exceed our numbers from last year if our pace continues as it has been going," Whitcomb said. The Coast Guard's 222 calls from October through June is just 48 calls shy of surpassing the 296 requests it received during the entire 2022 fiscal year. The middle section of the Promenade at Fountain Court in Monroe County is now just twisted metal, charred wood and debris. Multiple businesses were lost. Neighbors from around the Tannersville area gathered to see what was left. "You know, it's upsetting. Like I said, a lot of people are going to be out of work," said Frances Caban, Bath resident. Around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, firefighters received a call about a fire behind the Trap Door Escape Room. Crews quickly knocked it down, but -- "Then about a half hour later, room started smoking up and at that time the fire was in the wall and it ended up traveling right up to the roof," said Jerrod Belvin, director of emergency services for Pocono Township. At 1:30 a.m., rescue and medical vehicles were responding to a crash on I-70 eastbound at mile marker 137. Fire officials say those involved in the collision were not injured so the medic left the scene. While firefighters remained on the scene to help protect local law enforcement officers from traffic, a vehicle crashed into the rescue vehicle at 2:10 a.m., damaging it heavily. The Licking Township Fire Company posted to Facebook, saying no officers or firefighters were injured. WBNS-TV CBS 10 COLUMBUS PHMSA proposes all railroads must alert first responders within 10 miles of derailed train cargo under new rule Federal regulators want first responders to know exactly what they are dealing with before reaching the scene of a train derailment, because the dangerous chemicals trains carry might require a specialized response. The Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration proposed a new rule last Wednesday that would require all railroads to immediately send the details of everything aboard their trains to every emergency responder within 10 miles, as soon as the railroad becomes aware of an accident. The new rule came one day ahead of a National Transportation Safety Board hearing to scrutinize emergency responses to the fiery Feb. 3 derailment of a Norfolk Southern train outside East Palestine, Ohio. SPECTRUM NEWS 1 - METERED SITE How Arizona firefighters keep cool while working in the summer VIDEO: With the scorching summer here, Valley firefighters are not only battling fires but the oppressive heat while doing so. "When we are dealing with 110 degrees, and a fire kicks out, we are asked to act," said Captain Dave Folio with the Scottsdale Fire Department. Captain Folio said part of the role of their command during the Valley summer is to make sure their own firefighters don't succumb to the heat. "Our goal is to really eliminate all heat exhaustion and heat stroke incidents with our firefighters." Arizona's Family got an inside look at the mobile rehab center they deploy to calls whenever temperatures are more than 105 degrees. They have frozen towels that can wrap around your head and vests which can be filled with frozen sleeves.
