VIDEO: Large Fire Erupts at Illinois Apartment Building Dozens of residents at a Palatine apartment complex were displaced by a massive fire that tore through multiple buildings Sunday, authorities said. The fire was reported at around 5:17 p.m. at a building located on East Dundee Quarter Drive in the Windhaven Condominium Complex. Video from an NBC 5 photographer showed flames and smoke pouring from the roof of one building as firefighters worked from a ladder truck above, spraying water on the structure. As of late Sunday, no major injuries had been reported. Numerous residents are expected to be displaced, fire officials said. The fire originated in one building, but eventually spread to a second. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO 2 Texas firefighters hospitalized after hit-and-run crash involving ambulance VIDEO: Two firefighters are in the hospital after their ambulance was T-boned in a hit-and-run crash Monday morning, according to Houston police. It happened just after 3 a.m. in north Houston along Airline Drive and Parker Road. According to police, the ambulance was returning to the station when the driver of a Chevy Avalanche slammed into the ambulance and drove off. The firefighters told police they had a green light when the crash happened. "They were just traveling southbound and got T-boned in the intersection," HPD Sgt. David Rose said. "The Avalanche kept driving westbound...we have some pieces of debris from that vehicle on the scene, but the vehicle is gone." Rose said police are now searching for an Avalanche with heavy front-end damage. Meanwhile, the firefighters in the ambulance were taken to the hospital and are currently stable. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON New York City Mayor to sign bills aimed at preventing lithium-ion battery fires Mayor Eric Adams will sign five bills into law on Monday, aimed at preventing fires caused by lithium-ion batteries. Over the weekend, a man died in an apartment fire in the Bronx that investigators say was caused by a lithium-ion battery. The FDNY says the batteries have caused 33 fires across New York City this year. Three people have died and 42 others were injured. Congressman Ritchie Torres, who proposed the legislation earlier this month, said batteries that are safely manufactured and safely used are not causing these fires. But right now, there is barely any incentive for manufacturers to ensure that they are safe. "The scandal is not that the federal government is failing to regulate the safety of these batteries," Torres said. "The scandal is that the federal government is not even trying. At the federal level there are no safety regulators or safety regulations." WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK Fire department in California sends crews across state for high-flood water rescues VIDEO: The Marin County Fire Department has crews traveling across the state to help rescue people trapped in high flood waters. There is a crew down in Tulare County. KRON4 caught up with the battalion chief in between rescues to learn more about their efforts statewide. Roads in Monterey County can be seen looking more like a river with cars floating. Californians who live in these areas have already been devastated by recent storms and are now faced with even more rain on the way. Graham Groneman is a battalion chief with Marin County fire and a part of a 16-person water rescue team. For almost two weeks, this team has been traveling across the state rescuing people stuck on flooded roads and people trapped in their homes. "Really assisting people out of their cars when they drive through standing water, which is one of the most dangerous things we do out there," Groneman said. KRON-TV MYNETWORKTV 4 SAN FRANCISCO Shear joy: Indiana firefighter donates hair to kids' charity When COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and closures began sweeping across the nation in March 2020, several Carmel firefighters decided it was as good a time as any to grow out their hair. Three years later, on March 14, the last of those firefighters finally said goodbye to his new do, shearing off more than a foot of hair to donate to a charity that is special to him. Matt DeRyckere underwent the transformation at Carmel Fire Dept. Station 341, where he is a firefighter/EMT. The last time he had a haircut was February 2020. "Once it got kind of long, I was like, ‘I think I can keep this going until it's long enough to donate,'" he said. DeRyckere donated his hair to Children With Hair Loss, a nonprofit that provides free naturally made hair replacements to children. CURRENT PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
