Piece of Twin Towers steel carries legacy of resilience in Soldotna fire station Nearly 20 years ago, the world and Alaskans watched live as fire, smoke and debris billowed from Tower 1 of the World Trade Center, and as, minutes later, a second plane crashed into Tower 2. The gravity of the situation sank stomachs and hearts, as just about an hour later, Tower 2 collapsed in just 10 seconds, followed about 30 minutes later by the first tower. In Fairbanks, Alaska, it was 4:45 a.m. when the first plane struck. Firefighter Dan Grimes was awakened, like many, by a phone call. "You need to go turn on the TV right now," he recalls being told. He watched, in shock as the first tower collapsed live. "There was just that moment of realization," Grimes told Alaska's News Source on Tuesday. "I was not initially in firefighter mode, I was in shock. But when that first tower fell, I just had this sickening feeling in the pit of my stomach." KTUU-TV NBC 2 ANCHORAGE Fire crews from Alaska are spread across the US battling blazes There are many fires burning all across the United States, with many states not being able to fight them by themselves, so Alaskans are there to help. Tim Mowry, public information officer with the Alaska Division of Forestry, just got back from a two week assignment at the Monument Fire in California. He said assignments like this are always an experience to remember. As fires tear through parts of the western U.S., Alaskans heard the call for help and were on their way soon after. "As you go down there, there's excitement, there's a little bit of an adrenaline rush because you're going to help some place that's in need," Mowry said. The Division of Forestry said that as of Friday, there were 375 Alaska personnel working all across the Lower 48, with 199 of them in California alone. KTUU-TV NBC 2 ANCHORAGE PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Massive apartment fire displaces dozens in Georgia VIDEO: A raging fire in southwest Atlanta displaced people from about a dozen apartments on Saturday morning. The flames gutted Harvest Oak Apartments at 2989 Delmar Lane. A battalion chief said the call came at 3:40 a.m. and the first units to arrive encountered heavy fire in the center of the building. Firefighters got the fire under control 22 minutes. Officials assessing the damage said one entire building containing 12 units was destroyed. The American Red Cross of Georgia is assisting 26 people displaced by the blaze. Red Cross volunteers supported the fire's victims with food, water and blankets for 10 families who were in the building. Volunteers also coordinated temporary lodging, meals, clothing and other essential items. Red Cross officials expect more people to seek assistance and total number of people impacted in not yet known. WAGA-TV FOX 5 ATLANTA Former FDNY commissioner on losing 343 firefighters on 9/11: ‘We had the best fire chiefs in the world' Former FDNY commissioner Thomas von Essen told "Fox News Reporting" on Saturday that the 343 firefighters who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks were the "best fire chiefs in the world." Of the 2,753 people killed at the World Trade Center, 343 were first responders from the Fire Department of New York, while another 71 were law enforcement officers from 10 different agencies. "We had the best group of fire chiefs probably anywhere in the world because New York City had so many high rise buildings, so many dangerous buildings, so many prevention laws, and codes and everything else," he said. The firefighter chiefs "really knew what they were doing," Von Essen continued, noting that once the second tower was hit by the plane, they had to "split them up." "I was in the North tower lobby and we sent half of them to the south tower to try to get a handle of what was going on there," he recalled. FOX NEWS Mississippi county gets new $1.4M one-of-a-kind 9/11-themed fire truck PHOTOS: Madison County took delivery of a new one-of-a-kind 20th Remembrance of 9/11 Rosenbauer 101 King Cobra Fire Truck on Thursday afternoon. The new $1.4 million truck was delivered after being featured at a national fire chiefs conference recently where it was highlighted because of its one-of-a-kind 9/11 paint job to commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11 featuring all the names of the New York Firefighters who were killed responding to the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers. The 9/11 20th Remembrance theme was designed with the help and input of New York City firefighters, said Donnie Weeks of Bonaventure Fire and Safety of Monticello who sold the Rosenbauer truck to Madison County. ONLINE MADISON New study aims to track search-and-rescue workers' exposure to carcinogens at Florida's Surfside condo collapse If you worked at or near the site of the building collapse in Surfside, researchers with the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine want to examine your toenails. Dr. Natasha Schaefer Solle, a research assistant professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, said the nail can reveal cancer risks. "A first responder will be able to clip their toenails, mail them to us and we take them into the lab, and we will be able to see the exposure they had heavy metals over a long period of time," Schaefer Solle said. The researchers are hoping that close to 1,000 people — including police officers, firefighters, and volunteers — will participate. The new study launched this week. It will closely monitor workers over the next several years to examine the effects of the exposure. WPLG-TV ABC 10 MIAMI PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
