| Juneau's Emergency Program Manager advises for winter weather safety There are ways to stay safe this winter, whether it be in the backcountry or in the comfort of your own home. Tom Mattice, the City's Emergency Program Manager, spoke about ways to be prepared. "We recognize that southeast Alaska gets diverse winter weather. Sometimes when winter storms approach we might not see a barge for a week or two. So people should always have at least seven days of food at their home and always have a go bag packed in case something should happen at their home that includes their medications and prescriptions and other things like that. But most of the time the barges come in and we're good. So it's the rest of the stuff we have to worry about. Icy sidewalks, too much snow, slick roads, too much snow leads to avalanches and can also lead to mudslides." Mattice shared the city's response in lieu of a mudslide or avalanche. | 2 volunteer firefighters die after battling Pennsylvania house fire Two volunteer firefighters died after responding to a smoky fire that burned a home in West Penn Township, Schuylkill County, Wednesday afternoon, according to the coroner. Marvin Gruber, 59, and Zachary Paris, 36, died after being called to the fire in the 1100 block of Clamtown Road in West Penn Township, near Tamaqua, according to Pennsylvania State Police. Paris was the assistant fire chief of the New Tripoli Fire Company in Lehigh County. A firefighters' labor union in Frederick County, Maryland, posted Wednesday night that Paris joined the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Service last February and graduated in September. The post also said Paris leaves behind his wife and two young daughters. Gruber was the assistant chief of Northampton Community College's Department of Public Safety. Officials with Verizon and Verizon Frontline were at the Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix Tuesday night to showcase the latest tech. Fire crews are better prepared than ever when they head out on a call. Verizon has hundreds of trucks and equipment that can be deployed to natural disasters or wherever needed. The trucks use a satellite to set up a 5G network where service may not exist or is down. That can give first responders a way to communicate and access information quickly. Maggie Hallbach is the President of Verizon Frontline. She says technology has come a long way, even in the past ten years. "It's not just about voice communication anymore. It's about data and delivering that data to that first responder who needs it most," she explained. A calendar shoot full of firefighters and rescue animals, that is. Fairytale Farm Animal Sanctuary teamed up with Winston-Salem firefighters for their 2023 calendar shoot. The brave men and women took photos with sheep, goats, rabbits, turkeys and even some ducks. A lot of the animals have special needs like prosthetics or are in wheelchairs. The organization is selling calendars to raise money to feed, care for and house the animals. The calendars should be available in a few weeks. WXII-TV NBC 12 WINSTON-SALEM Fighting fentanyl: North Texas mom teaches first responders about new treatments VIDEO: Fentanyl overdoses have claimed the lives of so many people in North Texas. It's a problem that shows no signs of slowing down as multiple law enforcement agencies have reiterated the dangers of this drug. There's a new treatment for combating fentanyl overdose many first responders are using called ZIMHI, which is administered like an epipen through the thigh and provides a stronger dose of naloxone into the body. You can get it through your local pharmacy, in Texas you don't need a prescription. Mother Callie Crow wished the responding officer used this technique when her 27-year-old son Drew overdosed on fentanyl in 2020. "Taken some pills that he had purchased from someone on the street and within minutes he was in cardiac arrest after taking those pills," said Crow. KTVT CBS 11 FORT WORTH San Francisco Firefighters Risk Cancer Every Day—Even Their Jackets Are a Threat San Francisco firefighters fear the "Cancer Sniper." It's how they refer to the deadly disease that struck down many of their comrades. "You kind of expect, in the back of your mind, to get hit," said fire department Battalion Chief Matthew Alba. "I didn't expect to get hit at such an early age, but I did." Alba was just 43 when doctors discovered he had a cancerous brain tumor, and two years later, he's still living with the disease. This morning, the San Francisco Firefighters Cancer Prevention Foundation sponsored a department-wide event to screen members for signs of cancer. The event was spurred by a chronic problem for the San Francisco Fire Department, along with departments across the country: Their members keep getting the deadly disease.
