Mat-Su Search and Rescue Teams discuss funding complications Mat-Su Search and Rescue (MATSAR) Volunteers have had to get a little more creative in how they make all their equipment purchases and pay for essentially everything the past couple of years according to Training and Safety Board Volunteer, Mark Stigar. Stigar said most of the search and rescue teams in Alaska are non-profit, volunteer based organizations. All volunteer search teams fall under the State Troopers, where he said they also used to get some funding from. "We have no source of income that comes into us for operations and maintenance or training recently in the last two years," he said, "because the statewide search and rescue group ran their grant out two years ago and it hasn't been funded by the legislature since then." Stigar said they need to pay for a lot of the ‘little things,' like gas, the emergency phone system, and smaller equipment like radios. At the end of the year, he said it would only be around $5,000 to cover their regular expenses. KTUU-TV NBC 2 ANCHORAGE PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

3 American firefighters killed in C-130 crash while battling Australian wildfires Three American firefighters died in a water tanker plane crash Thursday while battling wildfires in Australia, New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed. Rural Fire Service officials said they had located the plane, a C-130 Hercules, that crashed in the Snowy Monaro region of New South Wales state. Coulson Aviation in Oregon said in a statement that one of its C-130 Lockheed large air tankers was lost after it left Richmond in New South Wales with retardant for a firebombing mission. It said the accident was "extensive" but had few other details. "We are deeply saddened to confirm there were 3 fatalities," Coulson's statement said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the three crew members onboard." Berejiklian also gave "heartfelt condolences" to the families and said flags in New South Wales would be flown at half-staff Friday. FOX NEWS Michigan firefighters staying in trucks after mold forces them out of station VIDEO: A group of firefighters have been forced out of their station due to health concerns. According to the president of the Dearborn Firefighters Union, fire station five is a moldy mess. Instead of sleeping overnight and waking up if there's a call— firefighters have been staying in trucks. They usually stay at fire station five in Dearborn, but 7 Action News has been told what started as a flooding problem led to mold. Dearborn Firefighters Union President Jeffery Lentz says fire station five flooded two weeks ago on Jan. 9. He tells 7 Action News that firefighters were sent to other stations temporarily until the flooding was taken care of then brought back. On Wednesday, a cleanup crew discovered mold. Lentz says there is so much mold in the station – it's uninhabitable. WXYZ-TV ABC 7 DETROIT North Carolina county recommends shutting down fire department, firefighters say they're here to stay After 67 years, a Charlotte Volunteer Fire Department could lose it's funding from Mecklenburg County. That was a recommendation from the county's Land Use and Environmental Services Agency at last week's Board of County Commissioner's policy meeting. They say these community fire departments are expensive to run and although no official decision has been made, the Cook's Fire Department says they will do whatever they can to keep operating. "It was a kick in the gut for all of us," said Tommy Towner, Chief of Cook's Fire Department. At the last county policy meeting, the Land Use and Environmental Services Agency presented a projected budget plan discussing community fire departments in the county. They went over the history of these departments, saying in the past they were given a flat fee from the county to help run the departments. WBTV CBS 3 CHARLOTTE Phoenix fire truck drove up to 29 mph above the speed limit at time of deadly crash, report says VIDEO: A Phoenix fire engine was traveling approximately 29 mph over the speed limit at the time of a deadly crash in April 2019, according to the police investigation released Wednesday. The report, released more than nine months after the crash, also said the other vehicle's driver, Kenneth "Chase" Collins, 20, did not possess a valid driver's license and had marijuana in his system. Collins turned left in front of the engine, which was operating with lights and siren activated, according to the report. Police investigators did not specify which driver was at fault for the crash, and they dfid not recommend criminal charges. Phoenix Fire Engine 18 was on an emergency call on April 7 when it crashed into Collins' pickup truck on Bethany Home Road at 29th Avenue. The engine rolled over into a schoolyard, and the pickup was crushed. Collins, his girlfriend, Dariana Serrano, 19, and their infant son, Kenneth, all died in the pickup. All three firefighters on the engine were injured. KNXV-TV ABC 15 PHOENIX Bill calls for changes in Maine's 'Dig Safe' law in response to Farmington explosion VIDEO: Maine lawmakers are considering a bill that would make changes to the state's "Dig Safe" law in response to last year's deadly explosion in Farmington. The bill would add liquefied propane gas lines to the law. "Dig Safe" laws prohibit digging around certain underground utility lines. In Maine, LP lines are currently not on the prohibited list, bill sponsor Rep. Seth Berry said. "It is unfortunate that we have not already passed a bill to protect our LP lines. If we had, the devastating explosion in Farmington could have been avoided. We must take action now to ensure the safety of Mainers and to prevent an event like this from happening in our state again," Berry said. Berry said previous attempts to add LP lines to Maine's "Dig Safe" law did not pass in the Legislature. WMTW-TV ABC 8 POLAND SPRING PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
