Division of Forestry & Fire Protection uses Alaskan resources strategically in third day of lightning caused fires PHOTOS: Since Monday afternoon, 22 lightning-caused fires started in State of Alaska protection jurisdiction after severe thunderstorms passed through Interior Alaska. Over 30,000 lightning strikes occurred in three days during Red Flag Warning and Very High Fire Danger conditions that caused more than 70 fires statewide. Late July is traditionally a time when Alaska receives season-ending rains and resources begin deploying to assist with fires in the Lower 48. Our Alaskan firefighters continue to assist our Canadian and U.S. partners due to national resources shortages. With the increase in localized activity, Alaska is coordinating bringing needed operational assets back to the state. Resource availability is a current challenge with the competing fire seasons. Flexibility and quick movement of resources is allowing the Division of Forestry & Fire Protection to protect the public, infrastructure and other values at risk. Newly released video of exploding New Jersey apartment building shows impact of blast New video shows the explosion and impact at an apartment building in Newark that injured six people and left 31 people displaced. There is still no word on what caused the explosion on South Pine Lane. The building, managed by Newark Housing Authority, was all but destroyed about 6 p.m. Friday after an explosion rocked the building. The cause of the blast was under investigation. The walls of the building were blown off, leaving a refrigerator and furniture on full display. Valery Lasky and her son work at a nearby deli. "He said 'Ma, a building exploded.' I ran and looked and saw a guy climbing down the rubble. The owner of the store said there were people all over the ground," Lasky said. Newark officials say six people were hurt. Five were taken to area hospitals. One woman suffered from serious burns. WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK Crane accidents are shockingly common; Here's why they happen When a fire broke out in the suspended operator's cab of a massive construction crane in New York City early Wednesday, it didn't take long for the structure, which was 45 stories high, to come crashing down. Within minutes, the top of the crane's boom arm careened over like a falling tree, slamming its tip into the top of a building across the street before swinging down and crashing into the side of the building it had been constructing. Debris was sent hurtling to the ground. Four civilians and two firefighters were injured. According to construction experts, the causes of many crane collapses range from improper assembly and installation to operator error to unexpected weather. Improper installation is often the main culprit, but not the only cause. A global study found that there were 872 tower crane accidents or collapses between 2000 and 2009 causing at least 668 deaths.
