Column: Should there be 'device-free zones' in the station? Young people almost never talk on the phone anymore. Compared to those of the same age 30 years ago, they hang out together in person much less. What they do – and do a lot of – is communicate via text and social media. And this fact creates some challenges for the emergency services. It's not just young people, of course. Almost everyone with a cell phone is spending time texting and engaging in social media to some degree. The difference is that older people have more experience with other forms of communication, too. For young people, virtual connection is so prevalent that they may feel uncomfortable with face-to-face communication. The inability to communicate well in person is a problem for the emergency services. FIRERESCUE1 PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

"Our hearts go out to Dwain Bradshaw's family, loved ones, and all of the men and women of Escambia County Fire Rescue who are grieving the loss of their colleague and friend. I, along with the Board of County Commissioners, ask that you please keep all first responders in your prayers as they continue to selflessly risk their lives every day to protect and serve the public." WKRG-TV CBS 5 Audit shows Los Angeles firefighter was paid $360G in overtime last fiscal year A Los Angeles firefighter received more than $360,010 in overtime last fiscal year, a city audit found Wednesday, according to a report. The audit reported that 18 other Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) employees received more than $200,000 in overtime pay and 90 percent of police and fire employees received some amount of overtime, The Los Angeles Times reported. An LAFD spokesperson said overtime is necessary for the department's "constant staffing model." He didn't give any details on the firefighters. The audit found that city and fire employees earned an average of $27,737 last fiscal year and the city's general employees made an average of $7,528. FOX NEWS Firefighters in New York fight security plan after drug scandal The city firefighters' union is fighting back against plans to install security cameras at all three of its firehouses in the wake of a drug-ring scandal. Middletown Firefighters Association Inc. Local 1027 filed an improper practice charge with the state Public Employment Relations Board on Oct. 21 against city hall for the soon-to-be-installed video surveillance cameras at the Central Firehouse on East Main Street, the Wallkill Street Station on Wallkill Avenue and the North Street Station. According to a copy of the complaint obtained by the Times Herald-Record, the union alleges the cameras were being installed without its consent and without prior negotiation. The union asked for a cease and desist order to prevent the city from moving forward with installing the cameras. TIMES HERALD-RECORD - METERED SITE How an Illinois firefighter's side hustle morphed into a flourishing coffee business Coffee has fueled Luke Schneider's career, which began in the U.S. Navy when he served as Damage Control 2nd Class Petty Officer, and continues to fuel his post at the Rockford, Illinois Fire Department. "I started drinking coffee when I was in the Navy working long hours and long shifts to stay awake," said Schneider. "Coffee was a necessity, and when I got out of the Navy, it was the same in the fire department. You drink a lot of coffee, and it's essential at every fire station." Coffee evolved from a necessity into a hobby, thanks to his wife, Emily. Schneider told FOX Business that the two of them would spend weekends venturing into different cafes tasting freshly roasted coffee. The couple shortly thereafter began roasting their own beans and gifting their blends to friends and family. Schnieder created his own "fire department blend" which sparked the idea for his company Fire Department Coffee. FOX BUSINESS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
