| Western Division Headline: Seattle launches crisis responder team to handle 911 calls alongside police and firefighters VIDEO/PHOTOS: A team of mental health professionals will now be responding along with police and firefighters to calls of people who are in crisis in Seattle. The Community Assisted Response and Engagement (CARE) department is adding six behavioral health specialists to the city's 911 systems. The pilot program, which started Monday, will provide service from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. in downtown Seattle, the Chinatown-International District and SODO. "CARE responders are dispatched by calling 9-1-1 like the City's other emergency services," the CARE department wrote in a statement. "Trained call takers in the City's 911 Center will decide which incidents are appropriate for this response. Calls eligible for a CARE response include low-acuity welfare checks, calls that don't need enforcement, and others that are non-violent, non-emergent, and non-medical." | VIDEO: Massive Florida house fire started in the garage Firefighters battled an early morning blaze Thursday after a fire broke out in the garage of a Miami Springs home, officials said. The fire broke out around 4:20 a.m. at a home located at 851 Hunting Lodge Drive in Miami Springs. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Division Chief Marc Chavers said when crews arrived, they found heavy flames coming from the home's garage. Wind made the fire worse and it spread to other areas of the house, burning through the garage doors and igniting two cars outside, Chavers said. Video from the scene showed massive flames coming from the ceiling of the home as fire crews worked to put them out. The fire was brought under control but at least 40% of the house was burned, Chavers said. WTVJ-TV NBC 6 MIAMI Colorado fire rescue launches ‘tiered response' to emergency calls VIDEO: Aurora Fire Rescue is changing the way it responds to certain calls as part of a new effort to better use resources. As of Wednesday, the department is now operating on a "tiered response approach," allowing the department to dispatch units based on the severity of the incident they're responding to. Fire Chief Alec Oughton said it's a major shift from the traditional response of sending the closest units with lights and sirens to most calls. "There are calls where minutes matter, and there are calls where minutes don't impact the outcome," Oughton said. "So what we've done with this change in our response model is really adjust our response to better match the risk that's associated with the call that's coming in." It's an opportunity for us to recognize all the first responders in our community who keep us safe. But there was one 5-year-old girl who stole the show. This is Letty Willmore. She came to the First Responders event dressed up as her Uncle Chris. Uncle Chris is also known as Chief Willmore with District 1 of the Chattanooga Fire Department. Wednesday we sat down with Letty and her uncle to learn more about their special connection. For Letty, Uncle Chris is her biggest hero. "She told her mom and dad a couple of weeks ago that she wanted to dress up like Uncle Chris," says Chief Willmore. WTVC-TV ABC/FOX 9 CHATTANOOGA New Arkansas laws meeting essential needs of firefighters as mental health struggles become more evident The Arkansas Professional Firefighters Association is shedding light on two new laws in the state looking to meet some of the most essential needs for their responders. The union recently selected Sen. Clarke Tucker (D-Little Rock) as their legislator of the year after his help with two bills that became law in the recent legislative session. "They do so much, I mean they put their lives on the line for us every day," Tucker said Tuesday. Act 529 provides 168 hours of military leave time for firefighters for annual training requirements or other duties performed in an official duty status. "Our guys were running out of leave – they were exhausting their military leave then having to use their own leave or unpaid leave to both serve their community and serve the country," Arkansas Professional Firefighters Political Director Matthew Stallings said.
