Firefighters finishing work on BLM Alaska Fire Service wildfires and regrouping for upcoming hot weather The weekend's cooler weather is giving firefighters and fire managers a chance to regroup and prepare for the upcoming return to hotter weather. A week has gone by since thunderstorms rolled through Alaska, bringing lightning and sparking fires that resurrected what was shaping up to be a record-slow fire season. The result of approximately 42,000 strikes – 18,000 occurring on the first day of the lightning event – has so far been 117 new fires and an estimated 38,700 additional acres burned in the past week. With temperatures predicted to reach as high as 90 degrees in some parts of Interior Alaska, that number could increase even if the amount of lightning has decreased exponentially. BLM Alaska Fire Service fire managers are surveying the good work firefighters have done to suppress fires and continuing to support those still working on the six staffed fires in the BLM AFS protection area that covers the northern half of the state. VIDEOS: Four-alarm fire sparks in San Francisco building under construction PHOTOS: A four-alarm fire was reported the Hayes Valley area of San Francisco on Tuesday morning, according to the San Francisco Fire Department. The building was under construction, and the flames reached all floors. A total of four buildings nearby were evacuated for safety during the blaze. Those four buildings are being examined for damages as well. A neighbor nearby said her windows burst from the heat of the flames. At least a dozen fire trucks responded to the scene. No injuries have been reported at this time. So far five people were displaced by this fire, but that number could grow by a small amount in the coming hours. By 7:30 a.m., the flames had been extinguished and the water that had been doused on fire was visible throughout the structure. KRON-TV NBC 4 SAN FRANCISCO Related Video: Massive fire destroys building under construction in San Francisco's Hayes Valley 'People are dying': Houston police release final reports from Astroworld Festival investigation Houston police released a series of reports Friday into the investigation of what happened during the deadly Astroworld Festival tragedy. The incident left 10 people dead, including a 9-year-old boy, and roughly 300 other people injured. The more than 1,200 pages of reports released Friday morning detail attempts to stop the show just moments after it began. It includes statements from a security contractor, firefighter and police officer who warned higher ups about crowd conditions and urged them to stop the concert more than an hour before it was shut down. Moments after Travis Scott's 9 p.m. set, a security contractor texted the festival's security director, "Stage right of main is getting crushed. This is bad." He continued, "Pull tons over the rail unconscious. There's panic in people eyes. This could get worse quickly." KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Firestorm: Illinois city seeks culprits in string of suspicious blazes PHOTOS: It's been frustrating for Jacksonville fire and police officials as they work to find those responsible for a string of suspicious fires that have plagued the city. There have been 14 suspicious fires since March 2022 and all of them appear to have been intentionally set. Despite their best efforts, officials have yet to identify the culprits. That's a worry to Jacksonville Fire Chief Doug Sills, whose department is working with the Jacksonville Police Department to solve these crimes. "It will end poorly if this continues. My fear is someone is going to get hurt as whoever is doing this gets bolder," Sills said. Sills is most concerned about the northeast section of the city, especially the area within the boundaries of West State Street and West Lafayette Avenue, and North West and North Diamond streets. He has particular concerns about the 400 block of North Church Street. JACKSONVILLE JOURNAL-COURIER - METERED SITE 53 EMTs graduate in Baltimore amid widespread vacancies VIDEO: Dozens of emergency medical technicians graduated Monday in Baltimore, which is in desperate need amid open positions. The fire department graduated 53 EMTs, along with three paramedics. Jade George, a graduate, said she and her classmates faced a uniquely tough situation while training during the COVID-19 pandemic. But at Monday afternoon's graduation -- with eight family members by her side -- she told 11 News that she and her classmates are stronger after overcoming those obstacles. "I feel great. I feel wonderful. I'm blessed and grateful to be here," George said. "We're going to have great careers. I know that we were made to be here, all the work that we put in, the academy has prepared us. And I know that when we go out, we're going to help the citizens of Baltimore City." WBAL-TV NBC 11 BALTIMORE Bearing the burden: Florida fire rescue holds weightlifting competition for first responder mental health awareness Among the sound of the weights clanging and the anxious chatter of the competitors, the smell of sweat and disinfectant clung to the air. Some of Marion County's bravest men and women lined up this weekend inside the "Everyone Goes Home" gym to test their might in its annual "Bear the Burden" weightlifting competition. The event consisted of three main categories for competitors to test their strength: back squats, bench presses and deadlifts. Each competitor paid a $20 entry fee to the Marion County Firefighter Benevolence Fund to help raise awareness for first responders' mental health struggles. The event organizer, Marion County Fire Rescue Chief of Health and Wellness Alex Caban, anticipated a turnout of over 50 people and predicted that the fundraiser would raise at least $1,000 for the Marion County Firefighter Benevolence Fund.
