Juneau fire department graduates new firefighters Capital City Fire Rescue has added to its volunteer ranks. Fire Chief Rich Etheridge said on Action Line that twelve new firefighters were graduated during a ceremony Saturday at the Hagevig Fire Training Center. He said this class faced more challenges than other academies since the COVID-19 pandemic popped up right in the middle of their academy which made the training more difficult. In the end, the chief said everyone passed their final test with flying colors. "So we have twelve brand new volunteer firefighters out there ready to serve Juneau." KINY-AM 800 Follow Up: Wildfire in Alaska spawns impressive 'smokenado' as lightning blamed for 15 blazes in state A dark, towering column of air appeared in Alaska Monday after a wildfire south of Fairbanks generated smoke that was whipped up into a "smokenado." The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Fairbanks said thunderstorms that moved through interior Alaska Sunday sparked a wildfire 10 to 20 miles south-southeast of the Fairbanks airport. Conditions "are certainly not helping the situation," the NWS said. On Monday, forecasters said that "active weather" was once again present in the Fairbanks area, with some thunderstorms reported. "In addition to the thunderstorms, one of our forecasters captured this impressive photo of a smokenado from the wildfire just south of town!" the NWS said. There were more than 2,900 lightning strikes over the weekend from thunderstorms across interior Alaska, said the Bureau of Land Management Alaska Fire Service. FOX NEWS Fairbanks firefighters train with boats for river rescues The Fairbanks Fire Department (FFD) spent Sunday afternoon on the Chena River training with a riverboat and powered raft as they practiced boat handling skills. "We have to be ready to respond for fires, motor vehicle accidents, to ambulance calls; but we are also responsible for water rescues and helping people out on the river," said FFD Driver Nick Clark. According to Battalion Chief Scott Raygor, because there is a major river going through Fairbanks that people recreate on, accidents can happen and they need to be prepared to help. To do this they need practice. "We have to be, again, ready and familiar with our water here and ready to respond in case an emergency comes up," Clark said. The training they did on Sunday is part of their annual river training. KTVF-TV NBC 11 FAIRBANKS PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Firefighters Battle 5-Alarm Commercial Fire Affecting Multiple Buildings In California VIDEO: Firefighters are responding to a large multi-structure fire in South Sacramento. According to Sacramento Fire, the incident is at 3400 La Grande Boulevard. The 5 alarm fire has spread to multiple structures including a body shop, mattress factory, and pallet storage facility. The fire chief said firefighters are running into a major issue with water pressure, making the firefight more difficult. He also said embers have been spreading from the fire, creating several spot fires. Several small explosions have been heard in the area, which firefighters said were caused by tires and aerosols. Firefighters are also monitoring propane tanks in the buildings. At least 200 firefighters are on the scene and two were injured. Officials say those two firefighters have non-life-threatening burns. Firefighters say everyone was safely evacuated from the area. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. KOVR-TV CBS 13 SACRAMENTO Ohio fire department's overtime budget wiped out; plan to brown out fire stations The city of Youngstown says it is moving forward with a plan to brown out fire stations after the fire department's overtime budget has been wiped out. Finance Director Kyle Miasek told the city council finance committee Monday night, through the first five months of 2020, $116,000 has been spent on non-holiday overtime. The fire department's budget for 2020 was $110,000. "We have now used up our entire budget and given all the of the circumstances that we are going to be addressing going forward with income tax shortfall, with other revenue decline, we believe and in the administration, that we are going to begin browning out fire stations as a way of dealing with living within the means of the budget," Miasek said. While COVID-19 played a role with five firefighters testing positive and Station No. 1 getting quarantined, the majority of the overtime is due to call-offs which are up 78% from the first five months of 2019. So far, there have been 303 call-offs in 2020, compared to 170 in 2019. And the prospect of managing overlapping natural disasters has state and local officials, emergency managers, first responders, hospital executives, utility officials and restaurant and lodging executives in high anxiety mode. They have been at the planning table for two months while simultaneously navigating the coronavirus pandemic. "We're all here at the state Emergency Operations Center (EOC) because of the pandemic," Emergency Management Director Jared Moskowitz said. "That has provided more opportunities for high level planning than in years past." By Monday, first responders had treated more than 100 people involved in the protests, despite being attacked several times, Denver Health reported. On Sunday night, CBSN Denver was live when paramedics maneuvered through crowds to get to the parking lot of Argonaut Liquor on Colfax. There, they helped guide a protester, who suffered a head wound, to an ambulance and transported him away from the scene. Between Thursday and Sunday, Denver Health Paramedics treated 54 people on scene at protests and took another 57 to the hospital. That includes three Denver police officers and a civilian, who were hit by a driver Saturday night. Throughout each night of protesting, the first responders wore ballistic vests and helmets, as well as gas masks, to reduce the risk of injury. KCNC-TV CBS 4 DENVER 2020's safest states in America With every new headline about a mass shooting, terrorist attack, hate crime or natural disaster, many of us fear for our safety and that of our loved ones. In 2020, though, by far the biggest safety concern on Americans' minds is the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed around 100,000 Americans and infected nearly 1.7 million as of late-May. To put that in perspective, last year 38,000 people died in car crashes and there were around 15,200 gun-related deaths (non-suicide). Though tragedy can strike in any state, especially during this pandemic, some states are more vulnerable to danger than others. In order to determine the safest states in America, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 53 key safety indicators grouped into five different categories. Our data set ranges from the state's coronavirus support to assaults per capita and the unemployment rate. Read on for our findings, expert insight from a panel of researchers and a full description of our methodology. WALLET HUB PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
