EPA-funded study by researchers with the University of Alaska Anchorage targets wildfire data gaps Researchers with the University of Alaska Anchorage are getting more than $1.3 million to build out wildfire modelling tools for Alaska and monitor air quality, as wildland fires become more common and severe statewide. Micah Hahn is an epidemiologist who studies the health impacts of climate change in Alaska. She said there are a lot of digital tools, nationwide, that show how climate projections are overlaid with health impacts, like asthma. But she said in Alaska, there's not as much data available. She said some maps that chart wildfire risk and impacts leave Alaska off entirely. "There's just a big data gap. And we're trying to close that, a little bit," Hahn said. She said a big part of her project is to develop online tools, like flood and fire risk maps, alongside the Alaskans who will be using them so they have the information they need to access federal funding. VIDEOS: Church reduced to burned-out shell after massive 8-alarm fire in New Jersey A church that was destroyed in a massive 8-alarm fire in New Jersey on Monday evening was still smoldering on Tuesday. Chopper 6 was over the Fountain of Life Center located on the 2000 block of Columbus Road in Florence Township. The daylight revealed the extent of damage to the house of worship. A burned-out shell was all that was left. Smoke from smoldering flames was still rising from the debris. The flames broke out around 6 p.m. Monday. Officials tell Action News that kids were playing basketball in the rear of the church when they reported seeing smoke. It didn't take long before the building was completely engulfed in flames. According to Robert Tharp, the fire district administrator for the Florence Township Fire Department, more than 150 firefighters from across South Jersey and Pennsylvania helped fight the flames and supply water. The fire was under control as of 11 p.m. Monday. WPVI-TV ABC 6 PHILADELPHIA Firefighters highlight tax benefits of volunteers to New York Volunteer firefighters in New York save taxpayers an estimated $4.7 billion a year with their services, a report released Monday by the Firefighters Association of the State of New York found. The report highlights the economic impact of the state's 80,000 volunteer firefighters in the state and the effect they have on saving tax dollars at the local and state level. "This report underscores the importance and value of the volunteer firefighting service to New York," said FASNY President Edward Tase, Jr. "Without the dedication and service of the brave volunteers throughout the state, local taxpayers would face a significant financial burden to fund the type of emergency response they are accustomed to. Our volunteer firefighters train extensively to be able to respond to their neighbors in a time of need, and we are proud to do our part to keep this great State safe and taxpayer costs for fire protection low." SPECTRUM NEWS 1 - METERED SITE Missouri: Color-coded hallways, doors and windows coming to schools to help first responders get to emergencies faster VIDEO: St. Louis County schools are one step closer to being prepared for emergencies. Active shooters, natural disasters, fires and medical issues -- all require first responders to navigate campuses quickly. "We always learn from situations," St. Louis County Police Department Chief of Police Kenneth Gregory said police learned about Central Visual and Performing Arts High School (CVPA). "They had a hard time finding which doors to get into," he said. Many schools are a maze of hallways, doors and windows and not every first responder knows the building. "We have seen when it comes to safety of our children, seconds can matter," St. Louis County Councilman Mark Harder told 5 On Your Side. "We needed to find a way to minimize the time it takes to get to the place where first responders are most needed." Your child's school may already have a system to aid first responders. KSDK-TV NBC 5 ST. LOUIS Decorated gymnast turned firefighter representing Kansas fire department in boxing ring VIDEO: A Wichita firefighter is preparing to fight a Tulsa police officer, all for a good cause. Newton native Carlye Anderson is training for a boxing match that will serve as a fundraiser for the Special Olympics. The former national champion gymnast first stepped foot into the boxing ring two years ago. Since then, she's been hooked. "Just learning footwork and how to move, going back and forth, trying to get the feel for something different," Anderson said. "I've never tried anything like it before, so it's been fun to try something new." Competing is nothing new to the athlete who won two state gymnastics titles in high school to accompany her national championship. On April 22, she'll enter the ring as part of "Smoke and Guns," a one-night charity boxing event in Tulsa in which firefighters go head-to-head against law enforcement officers with proceeds going to Oklahoma Special Olympics and Oklahoma Firefighters Burn Camp.
