Avalanche mitigation complete, evacuated Eagle River residents allowed to return home After Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson issued an evacuation order Sunday to evacuate all residents between miles 7 and mile 7.9 of Hiland Road who are beyond the debris of an avalanche that blocked the road, the Municipality of Anchorage began allowing evacuated residents to return to their homes, warning of them of possible future risks. The avalanche buried an approximate 300-400 foot stretch of the road in depths of up to 80 feet late Thursday night, stranding over 100 residents. According to a press release, mitigation efforts have completed and residents who had evacuated will be able to return to their homes. "Mitigation efforts for the Hiland Road Avalanche are complete and were successful," the release said. "Safety teams have assessed potential risks for reentry. Significant risks remain in place until snow clearing operations are complete. VIDEO: Firefighters battle 3-alarm blaze at vacant building in New York Firefighters battled a three-alarm blaze overnight in the Bronx. The FDNY said the flames broke out early Tuesday morning on East 165th Street between Prospect and Union avenues in Morrisania. As CBS2's Elijah Westbrook reported, the fire appears to be out, but it sparked a three-alarm response. Video showed the flames and smoke billowing out from the roof of the building. FDNY officials believe the building was vacant, and no injuries were reported. "We had heavy fire at a three-story building, this is a vacant building. Units were met with fire throughout. We had an initial attack, but we had to pull everybody out due to stability issues with the building," Deputy Chief Brian Shovlin told Westbrook. "The weather conditions did contribute slightly, the icing conditions." The Red Cross is on scene to help anyone who may be displaced. WCBS-TV CBS 2 NEW YORK Firefighters in some Maine communities working shorter weeks under new union contracts Maine fire departments are moving toward shorter workweeks for first responders under new union contracts. Orono and Old Town are two of five communities where firefighters recently have approved contracts that reduce their workweek from the traditional 56 hours to 42. The reduction is part of an effort to create better work-life balance for first responders and attract new firefighters to the field, according to the Professional Firefighters of Maine union. The change comes amid a struggle across Maine and nationally to recruit qualified firefighters and retain current staff. While firefighters in Orono, Old Town, York, Waterville and Gardiner will work — or are already working — shorter weeks under their new contracts, they won't take a pay cut because their hourly rates will change accordingly, according to Ronnie Green, a retired Bangor firefighter who is 4th district vice president for the firefighters' union. BANGOR DAILY NEWS - METERED SITE Monday marked the 43rd anniversary of Three Mile Island nuclear accident in Pennsylvania VIDEOS: Monday marked the 43rd anniversary of the accident at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant, the nation's worst nuclear accident. A combination of human error and malfunctioning controls resulted in a partial meltdown of the Unit 2 reactor and caused tens of thousands of Central Pennsylvania residents to be evacuated or to flee the area for several days in 1979. Unit 2 never was reopened and has been placed in monitored storage until the Unit 1 reactor is closed and decommissioned. In 2017, Exelon announced preliminary plans to close the facility unless a buyer was found; after no sale was reached, Unit 1 was officially shut down in December of 2019. Decommissioning is expected to last until 2079. LANCASTER ONLINE Related with Videos: 43rd Anniversary Of Three Mile Island Accident Massachusetts firefighters embark on PFAS turnout gear study Firefighters from Fall River and Hyannis joined their colleagues on Nantucket Monday in an effort to begin understanding just how much of the PFAS chemicals in their turnout gear is absorbed into their bodies. "My involvement really stems from having to bury two 30-year-old firefighters from cancer," said Jason Burns of the Fall River Fire Department. "Cancer has always been a part of our job, we get it. But something changed. Why are we now burying 30-year-olds? It used to be 50-, 60-, 70-year-olds that got cancer. Something changed and to me, it changed when they started pumping our gear full of these PFAS chemicals. You're seeing guys getting cancer younger, and the cancer is more aggressive." The firefighters took part in three tests. The first was intended to measure the overall level of PFAS in their blood, and see how it compares to that of national averages. THE INQUIRER AND MIRROR FDA OKs another Pfizer, Moderna COVID booster for 50 and up U.S. regulators on Tuesday authorized another COVID-19 booster for people age 50 and older, a step to offer extra protection for the most vulnerable in case the coronavirus rebounds. The Food and Drug Administration's decision opens a fourth dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines to that age group at least four months after their previous booster. Until now, the FDA had cleared fourth doses only for people 12 and older who have severely weakened immune systems. The agency said this especially fragile group also can get an additional booster, a fifth shot. The latest expansion, regardless of people's health, allows an extra shot to millions more Americans — and the question is whether everyone who's eligible should rush out and get it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to weigh in. KDAF-TV FOX 4 KANSAS CITY PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
