Governor Dunleavy Reiterates Need for Legislative Action on State's COVID Response Following the introduction of two pieces of legislation designed to strengthen the health care industry's ability to respond to the COVID pandemic, Governor Mike Dunleavy reiterated Friday night the urgency for swift legislative action on both bills (HB 83 SB 67). Governor Dunleavy has worked closely with the hospital systems to identify specific and targeted areas that directly meet the need for increased staffing, particularly for nurses, and hospital capacity. The legislation introduced by the Governor Thursday is the product of a coordinated effort to address both areas. The Governor urges lawmakers to be part of a focused, solutions based approach that his legislation can achieve. The Dunleavy administration is taking all available regulatory and administrative actions to respond to the pandemic. The Alaska Legislature enacts laws. ALASKA NATIVE NEWS PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

The heavy smoke and fire were visible for miles as the two-story building at 1026 S. Main went up in flames shortly after 8 p.m. According to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, crews were able to contain the fire from spreading to other structures and extinguished the blaze in less than a half-hour. WTVT-TV FOX 13 TAMPA Ohio city continues tradition of lighting candles for lives lost on September 11 This Sept. 11, Tallmadge Circle will once again be lit up with nearly 3,000 candles to represent the lives lost at the World Trade Centers, the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pa. on the 20th anniversary of the deadliest terrorist act in world history. Since 2003, the Tallmadge Fire Department, with help from local volunteers, have lit 343 red candles for the fire department personnel who died that day, 60 blue candles for police, 55 green candles for military and 2,518 white candles for civilians. The tradition was started by current Chief Mike Passarelli, who was the battalion chief at the time, and firefighters Jeff Quick and Tom Kilway. According to Passarelli, the fire department originally put out 5-by-7-inch flags in 2002 to mark the one-year anniversary, but switched to color-coded candles representing each victim the following year. AKRON BEACON JOURNAL - METERED SITE Louisiana fire chief riding bike to calls after Hurricane Ida damages bridges There's a volunteer fire chief who is riding is bicycle to answer calls for help because the bridges in his town are out. In a post, the State Fire Marshal talked about what Lockport Fire Chief Armand Autin is doing to serve his Lafourche Parish town. "Because the bridges are out due to Ida, Chief Autin is driving his truck to the closest bridge, then riding his bicycle across the bayou to respond to incidents," the post says. Bayou Lafourche cuts through the small town, which is located between Larose and Raceland. Autin isn't the only firefighter thinking outside of the box to continue to serve their community, the post says. "So many affected fire departments are taking these types of measures to continue to meet the needs of their communities," the post states. "This is why we are SO grateful more than 250 fire personnel from other parts of Louisiana and out-of-state have come in to help the locals keep up their standard of response." KATC-TV ABC/CW+ 3 LAFAYETTE Washington fire & rescue introduces department's first all-female crew For the first time in Graham Fire & Rescue's history, the department has an all-female crew. "It can be a challenge to really have women even be interested in the fire service," said Graham Fire & Rescue Lieutenant Jill D'Len. "Not a lot of women think that it's a career that they can possibly pursue. So that's why we're here, to show women you can do anything." The group of five women staffs the ambulance and the fire engine at one of the department's five stations. "There's a lot of hard work, a lot of time and practice in researching to be a firefighter, but we are here to say you can absolutely do it," said D'Len. The crew was brought together because of Georgia Daniels, a veteran of the department who plans to retire at the end of September. KING-TV NBC 5 SEATTLE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
