Deadly Houston fire razes cabin One person is dead following an early-morning structure fire in Houston. According to a dispatch, troopers were informed at approximately 2:20 a.m., of a cabin fire on King John Drive in Houston, roughly 15 miles west of Wasilla. As firefighters snuffed out the fire, a body was discovered in the cabin, which was deemed a "complete loss." Troopers wrote that the State Fire Marshal investigation revealed the fire started in the cabin's living room. "Deputy Fire Marshals determined that the fire originated from the living room area of the cabin, and multiple possible causes were identified, and all were accidental," troopers wrote. "There is no suspicion of foul play at this time." KTUU-TV NBC 2 ANCHORAGE PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Fire at Kentucky strip mall draws more than 50 firefighters to scene A fire that started in a strip mall early Wednesday morning drew more than 50 firefighters and a dozen fire engines to respond to the scene, according to the Louisville Fire Department. The firefighters were dispatched at 4:04 a.m. to a facility with an attached garage and multiple stores at S. 18th and W. Jefferson streets, Louisville Fire spokesperson Maj. Bobby Cooper said, in Louisville's Russell neighborhood. Officials had to call a second alarm on the blaze and were still on the scene after 7 a.m. in a defensive operation, hitting the fire with water from the outside instead of the inside. "The building will be a total loss," Cooper added. Cooper said the building is owned by SKS Tax Service. At least three businesses were housed at the strip mall – Fire & Desire (a restaurant), Kendrick's Kuts (a barbershop) and Hip Hop Sweet Shop (a bakery). COURIER JOURNAL - METERED SITE Fire department in Oklahoma moves to new physical test in employment process VIDEO: The Tulsa Fire Department (TFD) has updated their physical ability test for any candidate who wants to be a part of the department. It's a test of physical and mental strength, and it must be passed before candidates can move on to the interview portion of the process. Up until January 2022, TFD did a candidate physical ability test of its own, but now the Oklahoma State Firefighter's Pension Board requires every department in the state to align with these tests. Tulsa Fire Chief of Staff Chad Miller said in a statement they are already seeing positive results. He said in part, "We saw fewer issues with the cadets of this last class being able to perform physically." KOKI-TV FOX 23 TULSA ‘It Rained Oil': Remembering the Explosive 1958 Hancock Refinery Fire in California PHOTOS: It was May 22, 2:00 p.m., I'm 9 years old, waiting on a Thursday afternoon for the school day to end. I've lived my whole— short —life in Lakewood, a new suburb incorporated in 1954. There are square miles of the same kind of neighborhood in every direction. I rode my bike to school and will ride it back. After school, I'll watch black-and-white "Popeye" cartoons with their bewildering 1930s cultural references. People say I live in suburbia, where the routines of family life are everything and nothing ever happens. The history of oil complicates those clichés. Oil from fields in a wide band from Newport Beach though Long Beach to the Baldwin Hills powered the industrialization of Los Angeles and transformed the city in the 1920s. Even in 1958, the region's oil fields are among the most productive on the West Coast.
