| Firefighters on Ice at Six Mile Lake at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson PHOTOS: Being a firefighter anywhere requires a cool head. In Alaska, it sometimes calls for one that is ice-cold. Fire protection specialists assigned to the Air Force's 673rd Civil Engineer Squadron headed to frigid Six Mile Lake at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson recently for ice rescue training. They tested their skills in a series of scenarios designed to mimic real-world rescues. The training followed a classroom course. Once the firefighters qualified in the skills needed to conduct ice rescue and recovery efforts in extreme cold-weather environments, they received certifications as ice rescue technicians. | VIDEO: 2 displaced after multiple crews battle South Carolina house fire Crews are battling a house fire in Surfside Beach Tuesday morning. Horry County Fire Rescue crews were dispatched to Heathermuir Drive just after 8:30 a.m. HCFR said the fire is under control and no injuries were reported; however, two people have been displaced. They will receive assistance from the Red Cross. Surfside Beach Fire Department and Myrtle Beach Fire Department assisted. WMBF-TV NBC 32 MYRTLE BEACH Fallen FDNY firefighter saves 5 lives, including 2 FDNY firefighters, through organ donation: 'His legacy' A New York City Fire Department firefighter who was fatally injured while prepping for a training exercise at work saved the lives of five others through organ donation, including two fellow FDNY firefighters. Veteran Firefighter William "Billy" Moon died after a 20-foot fall at his Brooklyn fire station on Dec. 12 left him with a severe head injury. Moon was an organ donor and his heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys went to five people. One of those people was retired FDNY Lt. Terrence Jordan, 64, who developed a 9/11-related illness after responding to the World Trade Center and needed new lungs, Long Island News 12 reported. Jordan had end-stage COPD and emphysema. "I was in such bad shape from one moment. And now I look at myself and it's like I have a new lease on life because of the Moon family," said Jordan, who might have died without the donation. "This is a C-8000 Ford tanker from Lattimore Fire Department," Whitaker said. "It cost us, I think it was about $5,000 for this truck, then we've got several thousand more invested in all the sound equipment and all the modifications." WLOS-TV ABC 13 ASHEVILLE ‘Kraken' COVID Variant, XBB.1.5 Climbing in Midwest, Experts Say More Cases Expected The new and highly contagious COVID variant dubbed XBB.1.5 roughly doubled its prevalence in the Midwest over the last week and experts say that growth will likely continue in the weeks ahead. The variant now makes up 43% of cases in the U.S. and more than 14% of cases in the Midwest, climbing in both metrics from 30.4% and roughly 7% the week prior, according to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The growth isn't unexpected as the omicron subvariant has been described as one of the most contagious variants of the pandemic so far. Experts in the Chicago area have been preparing for the variant to surge in the Midwest after the Northeast saw a rapid rise, with the variant now making up more than 80% of cases there.
