On Tuesday, June 6, 2023, at approximately 2:31 AM, Capital City Fire Rescue responded to the 1100 block of Fritz Cove Road for a residential structure fire. While responding, dispatch advised there were potentially two occupants trapped inside. Just prior to the fire personnel arriving, the downstairs tenant was able to evacuate the structure, contact the owner on the second floor, and used a nearby ladder to rescue the owner from the second-floor exterior deck. There were no injuries reported from either occupant. Upon arrival, fire personnel found a two-story home with heavy fire and smoke from the roof. The fire was well-involved in the attic space and affected the entire space upon arrival. Due to interior construction, the ceiling was wooden tongue and groove which significantly slowed a timely access to the attic before being too large of a fire to control from underneath or even the exterior.

PHOTOS: Multiple agencies responded Tuesday night to a structure fire on James Island. According to Charleston County Dispatch, the fire was on the 1900 block of Wild Wing Lane. Witness photos and video showed flames engulfing a raised home, with the fire threatening to spread to nearby cars, homes, and trees. The siding of a nearby home appeared to sustain damage. The James Island Fire Department was on scene shortly before 9:30 p.m. with assistance from the Charleston County Sheriff's Office. According to Deputy Chief Shawn Engelman, crews arrived to find the fire heavily involved and immediately began suppression efforts. The fire eventually spread to the rest of the home. One person was home at the time of the fire. Engelman said that the man was asleep when the fire started, but woke up and was able to escape thanks to his smoke alarms.

VIDEO: Tulsa firefighters should have the ability to use medicinal marijuana to relieve pain and other job-related stress, says Tulsa Firefighters Local 176 Union President Matt Lay. "Originally, it was brought to us by a lot of service members that talked about being able to move away from schedule 2 narcotics and a litany of prescriptions they were on, using cannabis-based products," Lay said. Grant Miller, City Councilor for District 5 agrees, saying he supports medical choice. "I think it's important for our firefighters have an alternative to these hardcore pain medications that they're forced to take right now," Miller said, "So, if we have a firefighter who is injured on the job, is burned, breaks a limb, tears a knee out of place, something like that, they're going to be in pretty severe pain."

The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a deadly car crash on Interstate 395 in Southwest D.C. on Sunday. At approximately 7:45 p.m., a Hyundai Elantra was traveling south in the Ninth Street tunnel, police said. The driver of the car began to take the westbound ramp and struck the jersey wall twice for reasons unknown, causing the car to crash over the wall and onto the southbound I-395 below. The Hyundai landed on the back of a Lexus, flipped upside down and skidded on its roof until it came to a complete stop, MPD said. The driver of the Hyundai was ejected from the car. The Lexus also flipped onto its roof and then struck a third vehicle that was traveling south on I-395.
WJLA-TV ABC 7 WASHINGTON DC
PHOTOS: When Washington became a state in November 1889, that wasn't the only big news story that year. In the final spring and summer of Washington's territorial era, big fires ravaged major sections of downtowns on both sides of the Cascades, from Seattle, to Ellensburg, to Spokane. Seattle's fire struck on the breezy, blue-sky afternoon of Thursday, June 6, 1889. It was caused by an accident at a carpenter's shop at what's now First and Madison. John Back tried to extinguish a pot of burning animal-based glue by dousing it with water, but the flames spread to the sawdust and other combustibles on the floor of the shop, and then on to much of the rest of Seattle. It had been a warm and dry spring, and the wooden buildings in the young city had seasoned like cordwood and were highly flammable.
