Snowmachines can spark tundra wildfires during spring thaw Did you know that snowmobiles have unintentionally sparked spring wildfires in Alaska? The record setting 10,302 acre Kwethluk Fire in the the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta was unintentionally sparked last April. Two snowmachiners were traveling across exposed tundra when the ignition occurred and the fire quickly grew out of control. Thankfully the snowmachiners immediately reported the fire to dispatch (800-237-3633 or 911) so that aerial observation could begin. Over the next two weeks the wildfire grew as wind blew sparks that were able to burn more dry tundra across sections of frozen creeks and across snow covered areas. We encourage you to spread awareness with people you know as the seasonal outlook for 2023 predicts increased wildfire activity again around Bethel, the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta and anywhere in Alaska with lower snowfall or rapid spring snowpack melt. VIDEO: Dozens of boats destroyed in massive Seattle fire PHOTOS: Dozens of boats were involved in a massive fire at a boat storage facility near the Ship Canal Bridge and Lake Union early Wednesday morning. Seattle Fire Department (SFD) Deputy Chief Tom Walsh said around 80 firefighters responded to the Seattle Boat Company, located on the 700 block of Northeast Northlake Way, after reports of the fire started coming in around 2 a.m. Wednesday. When crews arrived, Walsh said thick black smoke was coming from the fire and flames were estimated to be 50-70 feet in the air. The SFD said crews found an approximately 40-year-old man on one of the boats docked near the fire. The person was in stable condition and taken to the hospital for treatment, officials said. The fire was located just under the Ship Canal Bridge. Firefighters and city officials unveiled a new fire truck on Tuesday that will be used to respond to any emergencies at the McAllen International Airport. The fire department celebrated the acquirement of the E-ONE apparatus during a traditional "push-back" ceremony at the McAllen fire substation #4. "It's a tradition for the fire department going back to the 1800s in which the fire engines at the time were pulled by horses," said Interim Fire Chief Juan Gloria. "With that in mind, whenever a new apparatus arrived to a fire house, the firefighters themselves would bring the truck to the front of the fire station — they would clean it, they would wash it and, by hand, they would push it back inside the quarters to put it in service and that is what we're going to replicate today." The new truck is equipped with a 1,500 gallon on-board water tank and a high extendable reach turret, or H.E.R.T., piercing tip. THE MONITOR Female firefighter crew makes history in Missouri; first woman-led firehouse team in over 150 years For the first time in 165 years, an all-female fire crew will run a St. Louis Fire Department firehouse. "This has never happened. To have four women on one company," says Acting Fire Captain, Jessica Jackson. Firefighters Pamela Saunders-Isaac, Licole McKinney, Jessica Jackson, and Elizabeth McCormick make up the historical team of women leading Engine 26 in North City. "When that bell ring, we come together, and we get the job done," said Fire Private Pamela Saunders-Isaac. "It's phenomenal. It's something that I've never foreseen to come," Acting Fire Capt. Licole McKinney says. Fire Private Elizabeth McCormick is a 6-year veteran and is one of two female firefighters hired over the last 15 years. "I feel super honored and privileged to work for what I believe is the greatest department in the world," said McCormick. "I think there's obviously more work to be done when it comes in the recruitment, hiring and retention of firefighters in general but especially female firefighters." KMOV-TV CBS/MYNETWORKTV 4 ST. LOUIS An emerging fungal threat spread at an alarming rate in US health care facilities, study says Clinical cases of Candida auris, an emerging fungus considered an urgent threat, nearly doubled in 2021, according to new data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There was also a tripling of the number of cases resistant to echinocandins, the first-line treatment for Candida auris infections. The research, published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine, evaluated cases of Candida auris reported to the CDC from 2016 – the year in which cases were first reported in the US – to 2021. The study authors found that clinical cases increased each year, rising from 53 in 2016 to 330 in 2018 and then skyrocketing from 476 in 2019 to 1,471 in 2021. Cases of Candida auris also expanded geographically. . Although it was initially confined mostly to the New York City and Chicago areas, Candida auris is now present in more than half of US states. Between 2019 and 2021, 17 states identified their first cases. CNN HEALTH PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
