Barley Way Fire crews achieve 90% containment The Barley Way Fire remains at 310 acres and containment increased to 90% as of Tuesday, May 23. Hotshot crews continued with mop up operations throughout the day on Monday and have been monitoring for hot spots while heavy equipment has been working on the fire to help prevent any new spread. On Tuesday, the Midnight Sun Hotshots worked from the heel of the fire, continuing to search for hot spots and ensuring they are extinguished and the burned area is cool. The Chena Hotshots continued enforcing the containment line to prohibit any advancement of the fire. The Division of Forestry & Fire Protection's White Mountain Type 2 Module mobilized to the fire from Fairbanks and are on scene aiding in operations. The hotshot crews are expected to demobilize in the coming days so they can be available for new starts. ALASKA WILDLAND FIRE INFORMATION PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: School bus, cars destroyed by fire in New York; 6 students rescued safely Several students were evacuated safely after a fire engulfed an entire school bus in Queens on Tuesday. First responders received a call around 3:45 p.m. of multiple vehicles on fire at 65-44 Saunders Street in Rego Park. Newscopter 7 was over the scene and captured a school bus engulfed in flames with black smoke swirling into the sky. The fire was so intense that it also spread to nearby cars parked along the street. About six units and 30 firefighters responded and worked to put out the fire. However, it was thanks to a real-life hero that this disaster did not turn tragic. The school bus driver, with more than 30 years behind the wheel, is being given all the credit for shepherding half a dozen young, frightened students off the bus and away from danger. WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK In response to 2012 jet crash, fire department in Virginia launches initiative to catch work-related cancer early Water, and lots of it, is one of a firefighter's most powerful weapons. But a small vial of blood can also go a long way in saving lives among their ranks. Virginia Beach is screening hundreds of firefighters this week for more than 50 types of cancer — which is the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths in departments nationwide. As part of a long-term response to the 2012 crash of a Navy fighter jet into an apartment complex, department and city leadership have invested in testing all current firefighters ages 21 and older, along with retirees who responded to the Good Friday crash. Norman Williams, battalion chief for health and wellness at the Virginia Beach Fire Department, said he initially saw Chesapeake firefighters receive cancer screening, so he began looking into options for VBFD. It took a few months to get it organized, he said, but once it was announced that it would be offered to the firefighters, he's received positive feedback. THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT - METERED SITE Female firefighters become trailblazers for Indianapolis 500 Track Rescue VIDEO: The world of IndyCar got an up-close look at the Indianapolis 500 Track Rescue teams Monday, when Stefan Wilson and Katherine Legge crashed in Turn 1 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. But what fans might not realize is how many women respond to those wrecks. "When I go out in public and I'm wearing anything that says track rescue on it, they're like, ‘Oh, your husband's a member of the track rescue team?' And I'm like, ‘No I am!'" Amber Hull said. 120 firefighters make up the Track Rescue team for the Indianapolis 500. Only nine are women. "I got into the fire service about 20 years ago. I wanted to add something new. I decided to go out to the race track and check that out. Fell in love with it, and the rest is history," Hull said. "They're very surprised," Dana Werle said.
