| Chaplain Volunteers to Serve Haines First Responders First responders in Haines will now have the benefit of an official Chaplain. Pastor Matt Jones, of the Port Chilkoot Bible Church, has recently offered to volunteer his services to Haines police officers, firefighters and emergency medical personnel. Serving in the Coast Guard for twenty six years has made Jones intimately familiar with the stresses first responders face and the needs that can result. Hailing from Kansas, he went on to a career in the Coast Guard that took him from Florida and Louisiana, through the Persian Gulf, to Kodiak, Valdez and Juneau. Upon retiring he felt the need to serve in a more spiritual manner, and he has been a full time minister for the last eight years. "A Chaplain is meant to be specifically non denominational, and is meant to be essentially a friend to walk alongside people in a safe and confidential manner. And he would still encourage some of the same long term goals as far as communicating through difficult days, and challenges and things that add stress in our lives." | 12 injured after explosion at Maryland condo building, officials say PHOTOS: Twelve people were injured in a Wednesday morning explosion at a Gaithersburg, Md. apartment building, which sits across the street from Brown Station Elementary School, Montgomery County fire officials said. Officials said out of the injured, 10 people were hospitalized, two with critical injuries and eight with mild to moderate injuries. Two others refused treatment on the scene. Some of the injured include four children with minor injuries, said Scott Goldstein, Chief of Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service. Around 8:40 a.m, dispatchers received multiple calls about an explosion at Quince Orchard Boulevard. Officials said when crews arrived at the scene, 826 Quince Orchard Boulevard showed signs of a significant explosion and structural collapse, prompting additional first responders to be dispatched to the scene. WBFF-TV FOX 45 BALTIMORE Historic find returned to New Jersey fire company Browsing the internet can often lead to amazing discoveries, including the discovery of a historical artifact. According to the Long Valley Fire Company, a resident recently discovered a piece of local history while browsing the e-commerce site eBay. A historic badge was recently given to the fire department after it was discovered by an anonymous resident who claimed to be looking for historic items when they came across the enclosed badge. "It is very exciting getting such a rare piece and to bring it back to its proper home," fire officials said. The badge is thought to date from before 1918 and was shipped from Lakeland, Florida, according to the buyer. Prior to WWI, Long Valley was known as German Valley. After the war, the town was renamed Long Valley. LONG VALLEY PATCH California firefighters train with drought-friendly water recycling system VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Ventura County Fire Department trains its firefighters by pumping thousands of gallons of water a minute — despite historic drought in California. On Tuesday, the agency demonstrated a water-saving system used at its Camarillo training center to cut back on water use. The department recycles water via two PumpPod devices, which recirculate supplies used in training exercises. Officially called the Direct Recirculating Apparatus Firefighter Training and Sustainability unit, or DRAFTS for short, the county fire agency first acquired a prototype in 2017. It has since added two PumpPods to its training arsenal. The prototype is no longer in regular use. Andy VanSciver, a department spokesman, estimates each PumpPod saves about 4 million gallons of water annually. VENTURA COUNTY STAR - METERED SITE Former Florida firefighter amputee reignites passion for golf On her home golf course in Bloomingdale, Patti Valero is far removed from the night her life changed forever. It was 2009 and Valero was riding on her motorcycle when she was hit by a wrong-way drunk driver. Though she doesn't remember how it happened, Valero does remember waking up days later in a hospital. Her left leg had been amputated at the knee. The accident nearly cost Valero her life and her job as a Hillsborough County firefighter, but she didn't let it overwhelm her. "I was a bowler who was going to turn professional," Valero said. "Your weight leg, if you're right-handed, is your left foot." Unable to bowl, Valero picked up a set of golf clubs and began to take swing after swing. "Golf gave me back what I lost," she said. The rest, as they say, is history. "I didn't turn pro, I've just won a lot of things," joked Valero. WTVT FOX 13 TAMPA BAY Retired Texas firefighter launches non-profit as mental health resource for first responders VIDEO: Ray Schufford spent nearly 30 years saving lives as part of Dallas Fire-Rescue. But he says his calling came to him during his last years as chaplain. "I felt like God was placing me in a position that I could help so many other people because of the things that I had gone through, personally in my own life, because I could actually speak to whatever they were dealing with," said Schufford. Schufford's now retired, but he's still helping people. These days, he's helping his fellow first responder with a new non-profit organization called "2 The Next Shift." "The help comes with providing them with counseling resources, providing them with if they need something, you know, financially," he said. "Any way that I can give a encouraging word, you know, because I really feel like that's the thing that first responders need most these days: encouragement."
