| At least 3 dead in Wrangell after landslide destroys homes A landslide outside of Wrangell late Monday killed three people, destroyed three homes and left three people still missing, according to state and local officials. Searchers found a girl dead in the slide in an initial search after the first calls for help, but that search was paused for a time due to unsafe conditions and the possibility of further landslides, according to Alaska State Troopers. On Tuesday, searchers found a woman alive and rushed her to a hospital. Later Tuesday, a drone operator discovered the bodies of two adults, which were recovered from the debris, troopers said. Two children and one adult remained missing Tuesday night. Searchers with dogs continued their efforts and still considered it a search-and-rescue operation, troopers spokesperson Austin McDaniel said. ALASKA PUBLIC MEDIA Municipality engineers issue snow removal notice to prevent roof collapses in Anchorage VIDEO: The Municipality of Anchorage is taking action after several wood truss failures led to catastrophic roof collapses last winter, including one death. The municipality put forward a snow removal notice on Monday for specific buildings in the Anchorage area, in hopes it might prevent more collapses this year. Municipality engineers estimate the typical roof snow loads in Anchorage are already at 30% to 60% of their total design snow load, with winter only beginning. Ross Noffsinger, the city's engineering services manager, said it was important to put forward the notice due to the high volume of moisture-rich snow that's fallen in Anchorage. | California SWAT standoff comes to a deadly end after suspect's home burns down VIDEO: A SWAT standoff turned into a fiery inferno after the suspect's Upland home burst into flames after a gunfight Monday night. The deadly shootout started around 3:15 p.m. when deputies tried to serve a search warrant at the suspect's home between North Benson Avenue and North Mountain Avenue, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. The suspect shot at deputies when they approached the home. The suspect then barricaded himself inside for several hours. After multiple attempts to negotiate with the man, deputies tried to enter the home after deploying tear gas. The suspect then set off explosives shortly before the house burst into flames. He tried to run out of the house as it burned, but died after a shootout with authorities, according to the Upland Police Department. A quick visit to new fire stations in the Salt Lake Valley shows no more fire poles. More fire stations are being built without them, in this edition of Behind the Badge. New fire stations in Utah, like #125 in Midvale, have everything you may expect: firefighters and fire trucks, but no fire pole. A traditional staple for fire stations, Unified Fire Authority Asst. Chief Zach Robinson said they never planned for one when building the new station. Robinson, who helped design the new Midvale station, said they're phasing the pole out. KTVX-TV ABC 4 SALT LAKE CITY Pilot killed in fiery plane crash in north Texas shopping center parking lot VIDEO: A pilot was killed after a small plane crashed into a shopping center parking lot at a Texas shopping center on Tuesday, authorities said. Police in Plano, 20 miles north of Dallas, said the aircraft crashed directly outside a nail salon and Mama's Daughter's Diner, just before 6 p.m. "The pilot unfortunately lost their life in the tragic accident," police said in a statement on X. The pilot was the only person on board and has not been named while their family is informed. Remarkably, no one else was hurt and there were no reports of damage to buildings. Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Travel Safety Board are investigating. The cause of the crash is currently unknown. NBC Dallas-Fort Worth reported that in the moments before the crash, the pilot appeared to become disoriented, citing unnamed people who have reviewed materials connected to the flight. The number of fatal traffic crashes over the Thanksgiving holiday rose by 24% in the two years after the COVID-19 outbreak, hitting the highest level since 2007, as more people chose to avoid air travel on what is traditionally the busiest travel holiday of the year. In 2021, the last year for which data is available, 531 people died in 479 fatal crashes during the Thanksgiving holiday period. The number of fatalities was the highest since 2017.
