Soldotna man wanted after setting home ablaze and shooting at its residents, troopers say Alaska State Troopers are searching for a man charged with shooting at and setting fire to a Funny River home in a dispute its occupants said might have started over firewood. Sixty-two-year-old Ronald Beyering, of Soldotna, is wanted on charges of attempted murder, arson and criminal mischief. Troopers said both residents of the home were able to escape unharmed, though according to a Facebook post, they are looking for pets missing since the incident. Beyering was still at large as of Monday afternoon, and police are looking for information about his whereabouts. Charging documents, filed in Kenai Superior Court Sunday, said one of the residents of the Funny River Road home called 911 Saturday just before midnight and said Beyering was shooting at her and her fiancé, who also lived at the residence. VIDEO: Man uses drone to help firefighters identify hotspots from massive Georgia apartment complex fire People driving through Midtown Tuesday could probably still smell the smoke from a massive fire that destroyed an apartment complex on Monday night. The fire started in the Peachtree Walk Apartments, and damaged a number of businesses on 12th Street. Firefighters were finally able to knock it down with some help from a drone pilot who helped them identify the hotspots. Fire investigators are back on scene assessing the damage and again, Fess Burgess was here to help. He started flying drones three years ago. "A lot of practice, a few crashes, it is risky," he said. He was flying in Midtown with some friends Monday night when they heard how fast the fire was spreading. "This drone here has thermal capabilities, so it can show hotspots, you can see what's hot and what's not," he said. WXIA-TV NBC 11 ATLANTA Remembering the 23rd Street Fire that killed 12 firefighters in New York PHOTOS: On Oct. 17, 1966, 12 firefighters were killed in what was the deadliest day for the New York City Fire Department until the 9/11 terror attacks. Two chiefs, two lieutenants and eight firefighters lost their lives as they tried to battle a fire at 22nd St. by entering a building on 23rd St. before it collapsed. The call came in at around 9:36 p.m. at an art dealer located at 7 East 22nd Street, off of Broadway. The four-story brownstone was so engulfed by smoke and heat that it became impossible to enter through the 22nd Street side of the building. While the dealer had stored highly flammable lacquer, paint and finished wood frames in the basement that fueled the fire, the cause was unknown, according to the NYFD. NEW YORK DAILY NEWS - METERED SITE New for firefighters: A guide for talking with doctors A newly published guide is intended to help firefighters talk with their health care provider about the unique health risks they face on the job. Developed by the National Volunteer Fire Council, the International Association of Fire Fighters, the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the First Responder Center for Excellence, the Provider's Guide to Firefighter Medical Evaluations details the physical challenges firefighters face and how they impact health. It also features research findings on the risks of cardiovascular disease, cancers, sleep disorders, lung disease and behavioral health. For instance, the guide lists 19 different types of cancers that firefighters are at increased risk of as a result of on-the-job exposures. They include bladder, lung, kidney and colon cancer. In addition, it lists 11 different carcinogens found in smoke. In June, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer officially classified firefighting as a carcinogenic profession. SAFETY AND HEALTH University tests new technology to help seniors during California's Great ShakeOut, future disasters What do you do when there's an earthquake? Drop, cover and hold on, says the Earthquake Country Alliance, a "public-private-grassroots" partnership made up of people, organizations and regional alliances geared around raising disaster preparedness in the face of earthquakes and tsunamis. Orange County residents may receive text alerts Thursday morning, encouraging them to do just that and take cover as part of the statewide Great California Shakeout. First staged in Southern California by the U.S. Geological Survey in 2008, it returns at 10:20 a.m. Thursday, when about 9.4 million people statewide will participate in the earthquake drill. Of that, an estimated 865,820 people in Orange County will take part. That includes about 5,000 childcare and preschools, 510,000 schools, 47,000 local government bodies and 6,000 senior facilities. DAILY PILOT - METERED SITE New fire rescue units hit the streets in Florida city The first of more planned advanced Critical Care Rescue Units are operating on Jacksonville's streets now, funded from Jacksonville's 2023 budget. Along with the usual advanced life-saving equipment when someone is injured in a fire, crash or other incident, the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department's two new rescue units also carry high-level critical care medications like blood clot stabilizers and drugs to lower rapid heart rates. It also is the first time that blood and plasma for transfusions has been carried by paramedics, all specially trained to handle them as well as a ventilator, IV pump and other life-saving gear at a trauma scene or en route to a hospital. The new rescue units will be sent out to incidents where that added gear and paramedic training is really needed to save a life, Fire Chief Keith Powers said.
