Tracking COVID-19 in Alaska: 215 cases reported Tuesday, no new deaths The state on Tuesday reported 215 new cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths, according to the Department of Health and Social Services COVID-19 dashboard. State data shows that 67 Alaskans have died with COVID-19 since the pandemic began here in March. The state's per capita death rate remains among the lowest in the country. Alaska's daily reported cases have hit triple digits for 27 straight days — the biggest surge in cases during the pandemic so far — and case numbers are projected to continue to rise. The state's average case rate over 14 days, a number that is used to gauge community spread, also keeps rising. As of Tuesday, most of the state was in a high alert level, with more than 10 cases per 100,000 people. ANCHORAGE DAILY NEWS 'Dramatic surge' of COVID-19 in Yukon-Kuskokwim region: 78 cases reported in one day The Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation on Tuesday announced Southwest Alaska's most devastating COVID-19 numbers to date: 78 new cases in a single day, including more than 50 in a single village. YKHC, a tribal health-care provider, also reported that a Y-K Delta elder in their 70s died due to COVID-19 complications, marking the fourth coronavirus-related death for the region. The vast majority of the new cases are from areas where YKHC has announced community spread of COVID-19. Fifty-one of the new cases are in the village of Chevak, 11 are in Toksook Bay, eight are in Quinhagak and five are in the regional hub town of Bethel. YKHC has announced that community spread is occurring in all four of those communities. YKHC also announced one new case in Hooper Bay, and two additional cases between two different unnamed Y-K Delta villages. ALASKA PUBLIC MEDIA PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Florida firefighter speaks out on surviving fall in vehicle from expressway VIDEO: A Hialeah firefighter has recalled the night he flew over a barrier and off the Palmetto Expressway after, investigators said, he was hit by another driver, causing his truck to come to rest on its roof along the street below. Alain Pineiro is at home recovering from a fractured neck and rib, but it will take him longer to recover from the emotional pain of the crash. "I remember hitting the wall and thinking, ‘Finally, I'm gonna stop,' and that never happened," Pineiro said. Instead, he would be airborne in his personal truck after, police believe, it was hit or clipped by another driver on the Palmetto Expressway near the Northwest 122nd Street exit on Oct. 12. The fall was captured on surveillance video. The 34-year-old firefighter's vehicle landed on its top below the Palmetto on West 20th Avenue. WSVN-TV FOX 7 MIAMI Missouri: Retirement badge of Clayton's first fire marshal returned to family years after it was lost in Florida The daughter of Clayton's first fire marshal on Tuesday retrieved her father's retirement badge after losing it in Florida. Jill Halsey, 75, of St. Charles, lost the badge at a Florida restaurant years ago — when, exactly, is unclear. But now, thanks to the diligence of Clayton fire Chief John Paul Jones, as well as the Florida man who found the badge, Halsey again has a piece of family history. "It's like a piece of him is back with me," Halsey said of her father, Roy Weckherlin. "The fire department was everything to him." Ray Wright, 66, of St. Petersburg, Florida, found the badge in 2016. He initially turned it in to the restaurant's lost and found, but curiosity led him to take a picture of the badge and conduct his own research. He discovered the badge was from Missouri, so he contacted the Clayton Fire Department. ST. LOUIS POST DISPATCH Police officer's bodycam video shows harrowing rescue of woman from burning car in California VIDEO: A Davis police officer recalled the tense moments before rescuing a woman from a burning car. It looks like a scene out of a Hollywood movie as Davis Police Cpl. Pheng Ly's body camera shows him pulling a helpless woman out of her burning car and into safety. But the scene happened in real life Saturday night in the middle of Ly's shift. "I heard on the scanner through the CHP channel that there was an overturned vehicle, which was on fire," Ly told FOX40. The accident happened on Interstate 80 near Highway 113. Ly said the closest California Highway Patrol officer was at least 30 minutes away at the jail in Fairfield. Ly was just a couple of minutes away, so he hurried to the scene. Shown through Ly's body camera video, he reaches in and grabs the woman by both of her wrists and then pulls. KTXL-TV FOX 40 SACRAMENTO US is nearing 'rapid acceleration' of COVID-19 cases, expert warns, as daily infections hit about 60,000 US COVID-19 cases will begin to rapidly accelerate in about a week, a leading health expert says, as the country's daily averages keep climbing toward the summer's peak and several states are setting hospitalization records. The US recorded more than 60,300 new cases Tuesday, and the national seven-day case average hit about 59,500 -- an increase of about 73% in five and a half weeks, Johns Hopkins University data show. That's the highest average since August 3. And things will likely get worse, experts warn. "It's going to be a difficult fall and winter," Dr. Scott Gottlieb, former commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration, told CNBC on Monday evening. "I think we're about two or three weeks behind Europe -- so we're about a week away from starting to enter a period where we're going to see a rapid acceleration in cases." CNN Michigan firefighters destroy $90,000 Mustang Shelby GT500 ... here's why Firefighters in Dearborn, Mich, destroyed a $90,000 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 last week, but they had a good reason. The department, which is located in the same town as Ford's headquarters, was using the pre-production muscle car donated by the automaker to hone the vehicle extraction skills needed to rescue victims from wrecked vehicles. They said it "almost broke our hearts" to rip apart the red coupe, which ended up with its roof pillars sawed through, hood torn open and its driver's door pulled off. During early stages of launching a new model, automakers manufacture several vehicles that aren't certified for sale and often end up being used for educational purposes rather than going straight to the crusher.
