Driver ejected during rollover accident on North Tongass Highway A woman was injured on Sunday night after she rolled her SUV and was ejected from the vehicle on North Tongass Highway. Her passenger received minor injuries in the crash. North Tongass Volunteer Fire Department chief Jerry Kiffer says the two were heading north when the vehicle went off the road. "The driver lost control, entered the ditch on the land side, went behind a guard rail, travelled 100 to 150 feet in the ditch line and then over a 30-foot embankment." The SUV was not visible from the roadway. Kiffer says the driver was trapped underneath one of the SUV's tires but her passenger was able to climb up the embankment to call for help. Rescue crews arrived shortly after 10 p.m. Freeing the woman from the vehicle was difficult. "The location of the vehicle being so far off the road, (with) heavy brush down at the bottom of the ditch line, down at the bottom of the ravine. And the ground was awfully soft. (It was) not easy to jack the vehicle up." Firefighters used fiberglass pole rescue jacks. KRBD-FM 103.5 COMMUNITY RADIO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Authorities in Arizona searching for missing Pine-Strawberry Fire Chief Gary Morris Authorities are searching for the Pine-Strawberry Fire Chief who has been reported missing after setting out to hike an Arizona trail last week. Sheriff's officials say 73-year-old Chief Gary Morris was reported missing around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. Deputies say Chief Morris, an avid hiker, was scheduled to do 51 miles over four days of the Arizona Trail with the ending point being in the Doll Baby area, southwest of Payson. Authorities say Chief Morris told friends and family he would call when he made it to the end of the trail, but never did. An Arizona Department of Public Safety Ranger helicopter was called to assist with the search, along with Tonto Rim Search and Rescue Team. Officials say the area is very remote. Overnight temperatures Tuesday dipped into the 20s. ABC 15 NEWS ARIZONA Kincade Fire: Harrowing dashcam video shows San Francisco firefighters driving into flames, embers hitting windshield VIDEO: Harrowing video of San Francisco firefighters sent into the Kincade Fire drives home the reality that our first-responders are risking their lives when they step in to battle raging wildfires. Firefighters from San Francisco Fire Department were deployed to help fight the Kincade Fire, which has now burned 74,000 acres in Sonoma County. Video taken through the windshield was recorded at 3 am Monday, as the crew headed straight into the fire. As they drive down a dark, narrow road against a burning hillside, embers and smoke bombard their windshield. In the middle of the night, they twist and turn down the curvy, two-lane road, inches away from spreading flames. KGO-TV 7 NEWS Plane crashes into New Jersey home killing pilot, igniting fire: 'Everything was just a massive blaze' A Cessna 414 plane crashed into a suburban New Jersey home Tuesday morning, igniting a massive fire and completely destroying the house, local fire officials said. The crash was in Colonia, about 22 miles outside of New York City. Video from the scene shows massive flames and plumes of smoke rising into the air. The pilot, the sole person on board, was killed, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. No one was inside the house, but the blast caused heat and fire damages to both homes next door, according to Woodbridge police. A woman was in one of those adjacent homes; she escaped uninjured after hearing the explosion, said police. ABC NEWS Several shots fired into West Virginia volunteer fire department; trucks damaged At least 13 shots were fired into the Ona Volunteer Fire Department building, damaging three trucks, Cabell County Sheriff Chuck Zerkle said Tuesday. The sheriff said someone shot through the station's garage doors, hitting three truck's radiators and transmission lines. As a result, two of the trucks will be out of service. Fluids were seen leaking from the garage. The incident happened sometime Monday night. There are no suspects at this time. Investigators are looking at surveillance cameras to determine more information. No one was hurt in the incident. WSAZ-TV NBC 3 Call for full-time paid chief, two more firefighters in Maine town The town's full-time firefighters say the current paid firefighting service is too thin for a town of York's size, and they are seeking residents' support to add two more people to their ranks. But as much as they seek relief from their 56-hour work week, it is just as important to them that the town hire a full-time paid fire chief. And if they have to wait a year or two for all of that to happen, they're willing to do so – on the proviso that the town step up to the plate now and listen to their concerns. Town Manager Steve Burns said he hears them, and even though it is unlikely two more firefighters will be hired next summer, he does want to take a comprehensive look at the town's fire service and plans to seek funding for a professional facilitator to run a series of high-level stakeholder meetings.
