PRC’s East IP, HK’s SIPS merge, add Zhong Lun IP team

PRC IP firm Beijing East IP has merged with the Hong Kong-headquartered SIPS, and also welcomed aboard a team of 36 IP professionals from Zhong Lun Law Firm.

SIPS, founded in 2012 by Joe Simone, a former partner at Baker McKenzie, has five partners, and some 90 professionals and staff spread across its Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong offices. It provides trademark application, investigation, and enforcement services to clients.

South Korean Big Six firm Yulchon has continued its recent expansion by poaching four seasoned M&A partners from Yoon & Yang. The quartet includes Sung-Jin Kim, the former head of the M&A practice at Yoon & Yang, along with Kayoung Kim, Hyerim Kang, and Junghwan Lee.

CAM hires Anand and Anand IP pro in Delhi
Indian law firm Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas has hired a second intellectual property partner from IP firm Anand and Anand in six months with the addition of Revanta Mathur in Delhi.

The year 2023 has been a special year for Initial Public Offerings (IPO) in India as activity slowed in other major markets across the globe.  India has seen a surge in IPOs, as more and more companies including starts ups are raising capital from the primary market. A company may choose to structure the IPO as (i) a fresh issue, (ii) an Offer for Sale (OFS), in which existing shareholders sell a portion of their existing shareholding in the company to the public, or (iii) a combination of a fresh issue and an OFS. OFS offers an exit for early investors in the company.  Also, generally post the IPO, the employees also get an opportunity to liquidate the shares allotted to them by the companies against the Employee Stock Option Plans (ESOP).

Philip Georgiou, an international arbitration and litigation expert who co-founded Hong Kong law firm Georgiou Payne Stewien (GPS Legal), has left to launch his own firm, Georgiou Partnership.

Dentons adds finance and funds partner from Gallant in HK
Global law firm Dentons has expanded its debt finance and investment funds capabilities with the addition of Charles Yim as a partner in Hong Kong. Yim was previously a partner at local firm Gallant.
