LIST: Emerging Markets Experts

Doing business in Asia’s fast-growing emerging markets can occasionally be fraught with risk, and companies require knowledgeable and well-connected lawyers to help them navigate some of these challenges. In this brand-new feature, we list 10 law firms that are doing important work and bagging key clients in Asia’s frontier economies.

SURVEY: ALB In-house Survey 2017

ALB’s annual survey of in-house counsel across Asia gauges the mood of corporate legal teams on issues like the work that’s keeping them busy, the challenges they are facing, and how their relationships with external law firms are evolving.

MANAGING PARTNER ROUNDTABLE: South Korea

In March, South Korea’s domestic legal market will be open to U.S. law firms, marking the end of the first phase of its liberalisation. Domestic firms are now looking to recruit talent, and strengthening cooperation with foreign law firms or through global networks. Similarly small and mid-sized law firms are looking to enhance specialization and also plan mergers. We speak to managing partners at three South Korean law firms to see where the market is headed.

FEATURE: Artificial Intelligence

A recent study by Deloitte has suggested that technology is already leading to job losses in the UK legal sector, and some 114,000 jobs could be automated within 20 years. Facing pressure from tech-savvy corporate clients, accounting firms and “Lawtech” start-ups, firms are venturing into machine learning and data mining, and hiring coders and artificial intelligence experts. We look at how AI in particular is on the verge of disrupting the business of law.

FEATURE: Arbitration

Singapore recently submitted the Civil Law (Amendment) Bill 2016 to parliament, and it is widely expected to be enacted as law in early 2017. This includes provisions to allow third party funding in international arbitration, and is expected to strengthen Singapore’s reputation as a leading venue for the resolution of disputes. We speak with industry watchers to find out more.

ALSO: China’s Belt and Road initiative is set to bring new investment opportunities, but also the need for dispute resolution options. We look at how Hong Kong is placed to be the ideal seat for arbitrations, and the benefits it offers.

FORECASTS: 2017

What will the year ahead look like for some of Asia's key economies? What are the key laws and regulations companies can expect, and how should they plan for 2017? Law firms in these markets offer their advice and predictions.

INDUSTRY FOCUS: Fintech

What are the key legal services required by fintech companies in Singapore and other hubs in Asia? And how are law firms stepping in to assist them? We speak to lawyers about how they are assisting these clients, particularly those in fast-growing areas like digital payments and blockchain.
