COVER STORY: ASIA TOP 50

Apart from listing the biggest law firms in the region, ALB’s annual Top 50 list also names the largest in each jurisdiction. We find out which law firms are expanding the most aggressively, and also discuss trends in each market when it comes to law firm hires.

FEATURE: OFFSHORE

After the sluggishness of 2016, how does 2017 look like for Asia’s various markets from the point of view of offshore law firms. Will China continue to deliver? Will ASEAN surge? We ask key offshore firms in the region for their predictions.

REPORT: INDONESIA

With the objective of increasing Indonesia’s tax revenue, both in the short and long term, the Indonesian government has passed and enacted a new Tax Amnesty Bill. The tax amnesty contemplated under implemented on the back of automatic exchange of information between Indonesia and major financial jurisdictions. We speak to lawyers about the potential impact of this.

 FEATURE: ARBITRATION

As international commercial arbitration rises in Asia, we are also seeing the growth of investor-state dispute settlements (ISDS). We talk to lawyers and arbitration centres about Asian countries’ varied responses to ISDS, as well as how clients can make sure they are protected.

REPORT: THAILAND

To enhance national competitiveness and make Thailand a more attractive investment destination in Asia, the Thai government has recently approved two acts directly related to the Board of Investment (BOI) – an amendment to the Investment Promotion Act 1977, as well as introducing a Competitiveness Enhancement Act. We ask local lawyers about the impact these will have.

FEATURE: REGULATORY/COMPLIANCE

Singapore and Hong Kong, which so far had a more relaxed regulatory landscape, have started introducing more stringent and strict requirements for customer due diligence and record keeping in line with FATCA, and the 1MDB expose and the Panama Papers incident means that scrutiny is set to increase. How can businesses survive under the weight of all the new regulations?
 

IN-HOUSE SECTION: STARTING UP

In-house counsel who join a start-up legal department as either the only lawyer or a small team face a unique set of challenges compared to their counterparts in larger organizations. We look at what these are, and how successful lawyers have overcome them.

FEATURE: LEGAL NETWORKS

This year has seen a war of words between legal networks and a global law firm after the latter launched a “free online referral network.” The debate as since raged on about the differences between the models – and the merits of each. We speak to both global law firms and legal networks to get to the heart of this.
