COVER STORY: IN-HOUSE SURVEY

What are some of the priorities of in-house counsel in the upcoming year, and how is their relationship with external law firms continuing to evolve? The ALB 2018 In-house Survey answers these questions and more. In-house counsel are welcome to provide their thoughts at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/IHSurvey18.

FEATURE: CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

CSR has become an important priority of law firms across Asia, be it pro bono work, support of charities, or other initiatives. We speak to firms in the region about the kind of CSR work they are doing.

REPORT: INDIA

With the dust from India’s demonetization drive and GST launch finally settling, dealmaking in India is on the up, particularly as the Modi government continues to remove regulatory hurdles and simplify laws to further attract FDI. We speak to lawyers about the trends they are seeing.

FEATURE: DISPUTES

In 2017, Singapore saw three international third-party funders open an office: First there was IMF Bentham, and it was later followed by Burford Capital and Woodsford Litigation Funding. We speak to lawyers on the ground on how TPF is impacting the disputes scene in Singapore, as well as to funders about the kind of cases they are looking to fund.

FEATURE: KOREAN INVESTMENT IN VIETNAM

The year 2017 marks 25 years of Vietnam and South Korea’s diplomatic relations. During this period, Bilateral trade jumped from $500 million in 1992 to $45 billion in 2016, while in terms of investments, South Korea has emerged as the largest foreign investor in Vietnam. Not surprisingly, Korean law firms have been opening offices there. We look at how these firms are helping Korean companies entering the Southeast Asian country.

REPORT: MYANMAR

The new Myanmar Companies Law 2017 is expected to be approved by the Burmese parliament by the end of 2017, and is set to drastically reform the country’s investment landscape. We assess how this law is different from previous ones, and the benefits for investors.

FEATURE: LEGAL TECH

In-house counsel in organizations both large and small have an array of legal tech at their fingertips, but limited budgets mean they need to be careful about what they choose. We speak to both in-house lawyers and solution providers on how they can find the right practice management software.
