ALB 2019 IN-HOUSE SURVEY

ALB’s annual survey of in-house counsel across Asia gauges the mood of corporate legal teams on issues like the work that’s keeping them busy, the challenges they are facing, and how their relationships with external law firms are evolving.

FEATURE: OFFSHORE

As we see a rise in the volume of Asian cross-border insolvency and restructuring work, and law firms are growing both their banking/finance and dispute resolution teams in BVI and Cayman to meet that demand.

REPORT: INDONESIA

P2P (peer to peer) lending has grown popular in Indonesia, jumping 205% in 2018. This has led to hundreds of fintech startups being launched, and older players diversifying. We speak to lawyers to get a better understanding.

FEATURE: DISPUTES

Singapore’s Ministry of Law is pushing forward reforms in two areas of dispute resolution: 1) a new Singapore Infrastructure Dispute-Management Protocol to help parties manage disputes and minimise the risks of time and cost overruns in mega infrastructure projects, and 2) a plan to simplify intellectual property dispute resolution. We speak to experts about the potential impact of both.

REPORT: INDIA

The combination of a new bankruptcy law, a race for dominance in the e-commerce industry and a record war chest at Asia-focused private equity funds means that India could see $100 billion of M&A deals in 2018. We look at some of the key trends and speak to lawyers involved.

ROUNDTABLE: MYANMAR

Myanmar’s promise appears to be waning, but is all lost for what was one of Asia’s most promising economies not too long ago? We speak to lawyers working on deals in and related to Myanmar about what the impact of the last few years has been, and where the country goes from here.

FEATURE: DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

Law firms have been gradually moving towards a more inclusive workplace in the past few years, but with the arrival of the #MeToo movement, and the rise in Asia of groups like HKGALA, this has taken on increased urgency. We speak to law firm leaders about how they are fostering a more diverse environment.

FEATURE: RECRUITMENT/SALARY GUIDE

As 2019 kicks off, we look at how much talent is worth at various levels, in different types of firms, and in Asia’s different markets.

FEATURE: CAPITAL MARKETS

As Singapore’s capital markets scene has waned, Thailand and Vietnam have become SE Asia’s new IPO darlings. We speak to lawyers in these markets about trends for 2019.

FEATURE: INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

China has announced an array of punishments that could restrict companies’ access to borrowing and state-funding support over intellectual-property theft. We speak to lawyers in the country about the potential impact on business.

REPORT: PHILIPPINES

Gaming is becoming big business in the Philippines, with the country expected to see gross revenue reaching $4.1 billion by the end of 2019. We look at how lawyers are involved in the industry, from gaming licences, to casino construction etc.
