ALB 2020 IN-HOUSE SURVEY

ALB’s annual survey of in-house counsel across Asia gauges the mood of corporate legal teams on issues like the work that’s keeping them busy, the challenges they are facing, and how their relationships with external law firms are evolving. If you are an in-house counsel based in Asia, please take the survey here.

FEATURE: OFFSHORE

With the world entering a period of growing uncertainty, particularly as the US-China trade war and the Brexit mess carry on, offshore jurisdictions are being able to provide much-needed support to international deals, listings, incorporations and restructurings. We speak to lawyers on how and why this is the case.

REPORT: INDONESIA

When it comes to Islamic finance, Malaysia may have had early mover advantages with a top-down approach in its positioning as a global hub. However, Indonesia is fast closing in. Recently, the country unveiled its Islamic Economic Master Plan 2019-2024. Two out of its four main strategies are directly benefitting Islamic finance and Islamic fintech. We speak to lawyers about the kind of work they are seeing.

FEATURE: DISPUTES

According to the World Bank, the potential network of Belt and Road Initiative infrastructure would touch about 70 countries. While it may make for large scale economic opportunity, it also raises the possibility of myriad international commercial disputes. We speak to lawyers in Asia on how companies can protect themselves.

REPORT: INDIA

India is expected to see M&A deals of over USD 52 billion in 2019 as mergers and acquisitions in the country are expected to remain stable despite global headwinds, according to a new report by Baker McKenzie.

FEATURE: CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

CSR has become an important priority of law firms across Asia, be it pro bono work, support of charities, or other initiatives. We speak to firms in the region about the kind of CSR work they are doing.

FEATURE: CAPITAL MARKETS

Stock listings in Southeast Asia grew 13 percent in a year by September, bucking a downtrend and with several high-profile IPOs set to hit the market by 2019. We look at the hotspots within the region, and what lawyers have learnt.

FEATURE: RECRUITMENT/SALARY GUIDE

As 2020 kicks off, we look at how much talent is worth at various levels, in different types of firms, across Asia’s different markets.

FEATURE: LEGAL TECH

In-house counsel in organizations both large and small have an array of legal tech at their fingertips, but limited budgets mean they need to be careful about what they choose. We speak to both in-house lawyers and solution providers on how they can find the right practice management software.

REPORT: CHINA

China has recently unveiled new guidelines related to the protection of intellectual property with the country indicating that it could introduce stronger IP protections and toughen punishments on those who infringe them. We speak to lawyers about why this is important.
